Chapter Eleven

Saylor

The drive to Knox’s house gave me plenty of time to freak out. You know how when you want something, and you’ve prayed for it or worked hard to get there, but when the moment comes, you’re like–eek–what am I doing? Am I ready for this? Yeah, that’s me right now.

I’m thrilled he wants me as his girlfriend. And I’m more than ready to give up my virginity, but what does the rest of it look like? What does Sunday at the stadium as the girlfriend of a superstar require? I’m me–regular girl who prefers to stay home and read romance novels.

When he flips on the blinker to his subdivision, my hands are shaking so hard, I stuff them between my thighs and the leather seat.

“What’s wrong?” He glances out of the corner of his eye while keeping most of his attention on the road.

I lick my lips and inhale. “I’m getting nervous about what this means.”

“Sex?” He nods to the security guard in the small white shack positioned at the entrance of his neighborhood. “We don’t have to have sex. I want to respect your wishes, so if you want to wait, we’ll wait.” His fingers squeeze the steering wheel. “We can wait as long as you need. I can take lots of cold showers. I’m quite skilled at it already.”

I shake my head. “No. That’s not what I meant. I’m not going to lie, I’m nervous because I’ve never done anything like this. I’ve only kissed one boy before, and he did it to humiliate me.”

“What?” His jaw tightens in anger as he pulls into a long driveway leading to a large two-story home with a wrap-around porch. It’s not frilly, but not a mancave type of place.

“You have a nice house.”

“Thank you.” His hands grip the steering wheel tighter as if he’s picturing them wrapped around my bully’s neck. “You need to stick to the point. Who was this guy, and what did he do?”

Happiness swirls around me. I kind of like this macho thing he has going on. And yes, there’s a part of me that would enjoy some good old retribution in the form of the jerk getting his nose smashed in by a punch from Knox, but I’m not vengeful. Am I?

“We were seniors in high school when he and his friends made fun of my freckles. They were always doing something to embarrass me in front of the other students to see my face turn red.”

“Fuckers.” He rips his hand off the steering wheel and shoves the shifter into park.

“One day, they were teasing me in the lunchroom, and he kissed me in front of everyone. I was in shock. Then, he started laughing and shoved my tray into my chest.” Visions of everyone turning in their seats and gawking as I stood there with mashed potatoes and brown gravy dripping down my red shirt are seared into my brain.

“That’s ridiculous.” He turns to face me with eyes that flash in anger. “Did he get into trouble?”

“We both did.”

“That’s bullshit.” He grabs my hand. “Who is this guy, and where can I find him? I’d like to give him a piece of my mind and a piece of my fist.”

“Don’t worry about it. That was years ago. Besides.” I shrug. “I don’t even know where Ben lives now.”

“Don’t worry. I’ll find him.” He strokes his thumb over the back of my hand. “If you aren’t worried about sex, what had you nervous because I could feel the energy radiating off you as we drove here.”

One corner of my mouth raises. To have someone in my corner who truly pays attention to me is going to go to my head. “Being your girlfriend is kind of a big deal.”

“Well, I am a big deal.” He chuckles, and some of the tension eases from my shoulders. “I’m not looking for the limelight. I get enough of that on the field. Granted, there will be a couple of times a year where I need to attend events to support my charities, but the rest of the time, I want a low-key life.”

I smile and clasp his free hand. “That I can do.”

“The time I spent with Madyson taught me a valuable lesson. I was trying to be someone I’m not. I’m not counting social media followers or trying to make a splash in celebrity magazines. I want to get married and have a family. I love my career, but when the game is over, I’m coming home to you.” He cups my cheek. “And if anyone tries to bully you again, I’ll be there to beat their ass.”

Butterflies flutter in all parts of my belly, and chest like someone shook a can of soda and popped the tab open. “That’s like the most amazing thing anyone has ever said to me. If that was in a book, it might even be the sweetest thing I’ve ever read.” I wrap my arms around his neck and press my lips against his. His arms encircle me bringing me closer to his chest. I feel safe and protected in his arms.

His hands trail down my back until they’re gripping my backside. Whoa, now I’m turned on. Not close enough. The console is in the way, and we’re in broad daylight in his neighborhood, parked in front of his garage. Oh, who cares? I slide my leg over his and crawl into his lap as our tongues mate in a slow intoxicating tumble.

That’s better. His mouth leaves mine, and he kisses along my jaw until he reaches the hollow below my ear. “If you want to wait, you might want to get off my lap because touching you like this is adding fuel to an already blazing fire.”

I dig my nails into his shoulders through the fabric of his t-shirt and grind against his erection. “I don’t want to wait. I don’t even want to wait until we get into the house, but your neighbors won’t appreciate seeing my bare butt in the window.”

He bites my neck as his hand slide under my top and caresses along my side and back. “But I will.”
