Chapter Ten

Knox

You have a girlfriend?

I don’t have a girlfriend. I frown and watch Saylor as she darts between players stepping out of team meetings.

Seriously? She thinks I’m still dating Madyson. No wonder she’s running hot and cold. This needs to be resolved now so we can get back to what we were doing.

I step off the elevator, ready to chase after her and shake some sense into her.

“Knox.” My dad grabs my arm. “Hey, not so fast. Mom wanted me to ask if you’re coming to dinner this week.”

“Of course.” I crane my neck, watching above the crowd to see where she goes. “I’ll be there.”

“Are you in a hurry?”

“Yes.” I glance back at him and smile. “I need to catch Saylor before she leaves. She’s wrong about something, and I need to tell her the truth.”

“Saylor?” His eyes soften. “She’s a sweet girl. You would be better off if you dated a woman like that. She’d make a perfect girlfriend and future football wife. Family pedigree in football. Works for the team. Prett–”

“Dad.” I roll my eyes. “I don’t need a rundown of her attributes. If you let me go, I might be able to convince her to give me a shot.”

“Oh….” His eyes widen, and he steps out of the way. “Go. And be sure to bring her to dinner with you. Your mom will be anxious to meet her.”

“Thanks, dad.” I pat his shoulder and jog through the lobby, dodging my teammates as they cheer me on in between catcalls. “Shut up, assholes.” I chuckle and smash my hand onto the silver door handle. It clatters, and the door opens, slamming against the bricks.

Where did she go? I glance to the left, but the road is clear. When I look to the right, I see Saylor step down onto the street. There she is. I jog down the sidewalk. “Saylor.”

She doesn’t flinch as if she’s too deep in thought to hear me. The sound of tires screeching draws my attention to the black Mustang coming around the corner. Saylor steps off the sidewalk and straight into Gunner’s path.

Oh, my God. My heart lurches into my throat.

“Saylor.” Nothing. She continues to stare down at the ground. Trying to break through her preoccupation with what a dick I am for cheating on my imaginary girlfriend proves impossible.

Shit. My arms pump back and forth as I run at top speed toward her, forgetting every bit of my training. Pain rips through my chest. Do not have a heart attack. “Saylor, stop.”

She glances at me with a pinched expression on her face, and Gunner slams on the brakes, screeching and sliding as smoke flies up from the tires. I grab her arm and pull her to me as she screams and lands against my chest and out of the Mustang’s path.

“Oh, my God.” She shakes uncontrollably as she clings to me. Her hands fist over handfuls of my t-shirt, stretching it and practically guaranteeing she’ll leave wrinkles.

The Mustang rolls to a stop where she was standing seconds before, and Gunner slams open the door. “Saylor, are you okay? Holy shit.” He shudders. “That was close.”

“I’m so sorry.” She lets go of me and turns to face him. “I was distracted and didn’t bother to look both ways before stepping off the curb. I’m….” Her shoulders convulse.

“Baby, it’s okay.” I rub her back in a slow circle. “You’re safe. Nothing bad happened.”

“I’m an idiot.” She shakes her head and slams her face into my chest.

“No, you’re not,” I murmur into her ear and glance over at Gunner. “Go ahead. She’ll be fine.”

“Let me know if you need anything.” He pats her shoulder, climbs back into his vehicle, and disappears.

“You need to listen for a second. Okay?” I grab her shoulders and hold her in one place. I’m not letting her get away–not until she knows the truth, and she’s safe from getting run over.

“Okay.” She nods as the adorable freckles on her nose and cheeks pop, causing my heart to tumble.

“I don’t have a girlfriend. Madyson and I broke up three months ago when I caught her giving my limo driver a blowjob. I haven’t dated anyone since because I’ve been trying to get you to stand still long enough to ask you out.”
