I shook my head.

“Okay then, you’re gonna have to tell us something. You can get as shit-faced as you want, but we need to know what’s up,” Drifter urged me.

I took in a deep breath, then let it out. I didn’t even know what I was gonna do with her now. I hadn’t made plans. I’d stopped even thinking about it. The thought of this being the outcome had been nonexistent because I was sure it was the ex-boyfriend’s.

Selena had texted me last night, saying she had been given tickets to a concert this weekend. It was some new band that claimed to play country music. I’d suffered through several of their songs when she’d played them at her house. What they sang wasn’t country music. Not by a fucking long shot. I’d agreed to go even though I shouldn’t have.

“Liberty is pregnant,” I said, my voice sounding raspy. I took another drink before looking at them. “It’s mine.”

“Fuck,” Tex muttered.

Drifter ran a hand over his hair; his eyes had gone wide, but he didn’t say anything.

“I fucked her one night. Several times, but one night. That was it, so I didn’t think it was mine,” I ranted, then took another drink. It no longer burned, going down. “But the paternity test results came back, and it’s mine all right. She had said it was, and I thought, Hell, she fucked me hours after we met. She probably did that shit all the time. Guess she wasn’t lying about that.”

Tex pulled a barstool out and sat down. “I mean, this is a shock, but if you gotta have a baby momma, that is one hot—”

“DON’T!” I warned him before he started that shit again.

He held up both hands. “Sorry. I was just pointing it out. Now, you can fuck her raw all you want.” He said raw like he was envious.

“I’m not fucking her,” I growled.

He frowned. “Can I ask why?”

“Leave it,” Drifter said to him.

Tex shrugged. “I’m just trying to figure it out. You know he’s gonna take care of her. It’s his kid. He isn’t about to just let her go. So, why not enjoy what he has?”

I wasn’t going to be able to let her go. The baby was my responsibility too. She couldn’t take care of herself, much less a baby. Did she even have a doctor?

“I don’t know what I’m going to do,” I admitted. “Trying to get over the shock at the moment.”

“That’s understandable,” Drifter said. “But, I mean, it’s like getting another chance. You didn’t get to raise Maddy. You’ll get to be in this kid’s life.”

I shook my head. “This isn’t the same thing. Madeline was Etta’s. Mine and Etta’s. I don’t even like the woman who is having my baby. I’m not moving her in my fucking house and playing family with her.”

“Well, I wouldn’t be against moving her into mine—”

I slammed the bottle down, shutting Tex up.

“Too soon?” he asked.

“Jesus, Tex, shut the fuck up,” Drifter told him.

I had to go talk to her. Telling her I was the father was pointless. She’d already known, or she’d been hoping I was and bluffing. It wasn’t like I could trust her.

“Why do you hate her so much?” Tex asked.

I wouldn’t be telling him or any of the others all she’d done in her past. Maybe it was stupid, but I couldn’t tell that shit to anyone. She was the mother of my unborn child. I might not like it, but I’d be damned if I let others think bad about her. She needed someone to take care of her, and it looked like my inability not to sink my dick into her had just given me that role.

Without him saying a word, the moment he walked into the office, I knew the results were in. I stopped what I’d been working on for him and dropped my hands into my lap with a sigh.

“I see you got the call with the lab results,” I said, going ahead and laying it out there.
