I heard a snicker, but I wasn't sure who it came from.

"Alejandro's brother was quite vocal about how he felt concerning gay men and what Alejandro was doing," Jake said. "It wouldn't surprise me in the least if he came here to mess with Alejandro and Delancy now that they are married. He would see that marriage as a blight on his family name."

"Yes," Detective Waterston stated, "Mr. Díaz said the same thing."

"Dante is a jerk," Jake said. "His grandfather isn't much better. He's always favored Dante over Alejandro. You might think that would make Alejandro bitter, but he just wanted out. When I told him about an opportunity here in New York to open a security firm, he jumped at the chance. I don't want Dante and his grandfather fucking this up for him. They have already done enough to mess with his life."

Okay, I admit it. I was impressed. Even I didn't know this much about my new husband. I couldn't even tell what was fabricated for the detective and what was truth.

"Well," the detective started, "I am pretty sure Dante is going to be going away for awhile. How long that is will be determined by the judge. I'll be sure to mention all of this in my report because I am pretty sure you've got a case for a hate crime here."

"And my bodyguard?" I asked. "What is going to happen to Hugo? He was just protecting me."

"As long as his gun license and registration checks out, I'm pretty sure this will be ruled self defense."

"It will," Alejandro replied. "I require all of the men who work for me to be licensed and have extensive firearms training."

"Then he should be good. If everything clears, you should be hearing from the district attorney in a few days."

"You can put me down as the attorney of record," Miles stated. "I don't want Hugo to get lost in the system for defending Alejandro's husband."

Detective Waterston nodded. "I'll make note of it."

"Is it okay to take my husband back inside, Detective?" Alejandro asked. "I'd like to get him out of the cold."

"The scene hasn't been released yet, so you can't go in until then." Detective Waterston glanced back at the tall brick building. "You know this place used to belong to a mobster back in the 1920s."

"Yeah, that's why I bought it." Alejandro's grin went from ear to ear. "It needs a lot of work, but once it's restored, I think it'll be really cool living in an old mobster's mansion. I mean, can you imagine the stories you'd hear if the walls could talk?"

"Pretty sure they would curl your hair, Mr. Díaz."

"Alejandro, can I borrow your phone?" I asked. I had mine, but this looked better for everyone watching us. "I need to call my grandfather. I doubt we're going to make that charity ball tonight. Besides, he's going to want to know about this." I winced when I realized I would have a lot of explaining to do. "I just hope he doesn't think this was all my fault."

Alejandro dug his cell phone out and handed it to me without question.

I liked that about him.

I stepped a little ways away from the four men and then dialed my grandfather's cell phone. I didn't really want to have this conversation, but it would be better if the news came from me and not the media.

"Alejandro."

"No, Grandfather, it's me, Delancy."

"Why are you calling me on Alejandro's phone?"

"Yeah, about that." I swallowed tightly. "There was an incident tonight."

"Delancy." His voice was laced with disappointment.

"It wasn't me this time." Well, shit. "Okay, it was me, but not the way you think."

"Explain."

"Alejandro's half-brother broke into the house and started roughing me up. My bodyguard had to shoot him. Alejandro is here with me as well as a couple of his friends. A detective is talking to them now."

"Oh, Delancy."

"It wasn't me this time. I swear."
