“Hey, Lock. You’ve done this before. Maybe you should take it over,” I whispered.

“Are you fucking kidding me? I’m married to a high-profile woman. I’m pretty sure the press would catch on if I stepped out with Wren.”

I hated that he was right. Still, I hated working close protection, especially for women like this. “Fine, but when this goes south and I murder her, it’s up to you to get me out of the country.”

“Sure, I’ll do that,” he snorted.

“I’m serious. I’ll probably end up killing her.”

He leaned in closer and whispered, “You’ll be married to her by the end of it.”

I held out my hand. “Wanna bet?”

He smirked and took my hand. “A thousand dollars says this woman has you wrapped around her finger in two weeks.”

“Two thousand says that I accidentally let her stalker through and kidnap her just so I can get rid of her without too much trouble.”

“Three thousand says I fire your ass before the job is over,” Cash boomed. “Her father is paying a lot of money. Don’t fuck this up.”

I slouched back in my seat and frowned at the picture of her in the file. Maybe I’d get shot before we left on the job.

WREN

I strolled into the kitchen, my heels clacking on the tile floor with every step I took. It didn’t matter how often I wore heels, I never got tired of them. Everyone in the kitchen looked up at me, surprised I was there. Frankly, I was surprised too, but my driver was nowhere to be found and I had to leave to meet with the ladies for tea.

“Has anyone seen George?”

“Uh…I believe he was filling up the car with gas,” the cook said, staring at me in terror. Honestly, I wasn’t sure why everyone looked at me like I was so horrible. It wasn’t that hard. If you do your job, you don’t get fired.

“Well, I have to leave. Please tell him I’m waiting.”

I spun and marched out of the room, heading over to the front hall where our butler Richard was waiting for me. He bowed as I approached, then held out my coat. I slid my arms in, then took my hat from his outstretched hand. Richard was always one step ahead of me, and because of that, he would always be a valued member of this house. At least until he was too old to do the job. He would be easy enough to replace. There was always someone from England waiting to come over here and show us Americans how a house should be run.

I didn’t care as long as everything I needed was taken care of.

“Ms. Wren, you have an appointment at three this afternoon.”

“With whom?”

“The protection agency your father hired.”

I waved him off. I didn’t have time for that. “Just tell them to do whatever they need. I’ll be out all day.”

“But Ms.—”

“Honestly, Richard. I can’t be expected to drop everything to meet up with the staff.”

I hurried out the door before he could argue with me further. I had too much to do today, and no time to waste talking with the hired help. George pulled up just as I walked out the door. I pursed my lips in disapproval as I stepped up to the back of the car and waited for him to come around and open my door.

“Ms. Wren, I’m so sorry?—”

“I had to look for you, George. I hope that never happens again. I have a lot to do today.”

“Of course, miss.”

He didn’t say another word as I got in. It was seriously disturbing how much guidance I had to give the servants. This was their job. Why did everything have to be explained all the time? My phone buzzed in my purse and I took it out, grimacing when I saw the name on the screen. I really didn’t want to talk to Bryce, but things needed to be settled.
