“Ever think of getting a breath mint?” I said as I struggled to get him off me.

He growled at me, showing me his yellowing teeth. I gagged at the smell of his breath, nearly losing my control. “Seriously, a toothbrush goes a long way,” I said as I worked my leg between us and shoved with all my might. He stumbled back, his teeth still showing as he wiped the blood from his mouth.

“You’re a real wise guy.”

“Actually,” I panted, exhausted already from fighting this guy. “Just a patron of basic hygiene and the occasional hair brush.”

Wren cried out again, but this time, I didn’t look at her. I couldn’t if I wanted to stay focused and not get killed. The man pulled a knife and grinned at me. I watched as he moved, how he was slower on his right side, probably from an old injury that never healed properly. He came at me and I dodged the swing of his knife, then slammed my fist into his kidneys. As he hunched over, I kicked the side of his knee and he went down hard. With one final swing at me, I grabbed his arm and spun the knife around, slamming it into his chest.

Staring at me in shock, I shrugged. “When you don’t take care of your teeth, it affects other things. Like your heart. See? You might have made it through this fight if only you had brushed regularly. Seriously, they teach this stuff in school. Or at the dentist.”

I twisted the knife and yanked it out as he fell over. I didn’t watch to see what would happen. I jumped and slid across a table, then slammed the knife into the man pinning Wren to the floor. He had her legs spread and was trying to do the unthinkable. But as I dug the knife into his back, Wren got her knee up and nailed him in the junk. I was pretty sure that hurt him more than the knife I rammed into his spine.

I grabbed a very shaken Wren and pulled her to her feet. “Are you okay?”

“Yeah, you know…” She swallowed hard, but pulled her shoulders back like she did when she was getting ready to take on the press.

I spun and pulled her behind me as we headed for the door. Fox was dancing on a table, flinging knives as he sang some song I didn’t recognize. “Fox! We’re out!”

“But I was just getting started!”

“Fox!” I shouted, having had enough of this shit.

“Fine,” he answered glumly, jumping down from the table.

I hauled Wren beside me as we ran for the door. When a hand snaked out and caught her around the ankle, I kicked him in the face, only to be tackled from behind.

“Would everyone please stop fucking tackling me!” I shouted, leaning back before I tossed the man over my shoulder. I felt a pinch and winced as the man left my grip. Looking down, I stared at the knife embedded in my side.

Slowly, I looked up and stared at Fox.

“Oops,” he grinned. “See, I thought I would get him.”

“You got me,” I gritted out.

“Right, I can see that. In my head…well, it ended with him on the ground.”

“He is on the ground,” I bit out. “Because I fucking put him there!”

Fox rushed over, slipping his shoulder under my arm. “Alright, alright. No need to get tense.”

“I have plenty of reason to be tense,” I snapped. “There’s a fucking knife embedded in my side!”

Wren ran for the van, sliding open the back door.

“Who’s gonna drive?” Fox asked.

“You want me to drive?” Wren shouted.

“Fuck, this really hurts,” I groaned, allowing Fox to help me into the back.

“I’ve never driven!” Wren shouted as she rounded the van and got in, slamming the driver’s side door.

“She’s driving?” Fox asked, his eyes wide with horror.

“Why would you want me to drive?” she shouted.

“Why the fuck did you tell her to drive?” I snapped at Fox.
