“It’s brilliant.”

“I know!”

“We’ll kidnap her, terrorize her, make her understand the threat is real,” Scottie concluded.

“Precisely.”

“Then,” he continued, “her father will be forced to acknowledge the letters. Except, when it comes out in the press that her security is incompetent, he’ll fire us for not doing our jobs. The threat will still very much be out there, and she’ll have some second-rate hack watching her. She really will be kidnapped and terrorized, completely defeating the purpose of what you’re trying to do. You’re right,” he grinned. “It’s brilliant.”

I shoved my fingers through my hair, gritting my teeth in annoyance. “Okay, it’s not a perfect plan.”

“It’s not a plan at all,” Edu retorted. “You’re going to have to keep things tight around her. It’s the only way.”

I hated that he was right. She shouldn’t be going anywhere with a psycho like this on her tail.

Lock walked back over to us, his jaw hard and unforgiving. “The fucker won’t listen to me. He said there’s no threat to him.”

“Should we send someone to tail him?” Edu asked.

“We don’t have the resources for that,” I snapped.

“He’s right,” Lock agreed. “Besides, we’re not getting paid to look after Bryce. Our job is to take care of Wren. She has to be our first priority.”

“So, we’re just going to let this other guy be butchered?” Scottie asked. “Tell me that doesn’t seem wrong.”

“It’s not what I would like to see happen,” Lock snapped. “But he won’t listen. What would you have me do?”

Everyone was silent as we considered our options, which there weren’t any.

“Right now, I want to focus on the father. I’m not convinced he doesn’t have a hand in this.”

Lock was right. This guy could very well be involved. “Any chance we can tap his phones?”

“Scottie,” Lock nodded. “Find out if he has any downtime—when we can search his shit. Anything that might give us some insight into this guy.”

“Will do.”

“Edu, change of plans. I want to hang back and see if this guy is following her or just showing up at events.”

“You got it.”

“Brock, as discussed, you’ll pose as her boyfriend. Under no circumstances are any of you to show your hand unless absolutely necessary. If we tip this guy off, we could lose any chance of getting to him.”

“You got it.” I agreed.

“I’ll start running down names and locations, see if Rae can get any video feed that’ll help us pinpoint this guy.” Then he turned to me. “Brock, I have an idea for tomorrow. Let’s strategize.”

WREN

Heels clicking on the stairs, I descended like the royalty I was, enjoying the way Richard walked ahead of me to the door. He was always on top of things. Except for yesterday when I was forced to let myself in because he had some emergency. What constituted an emergency for a butler? Was he out of silver polish?

I chuckled to myself as I approached him. He bowed slightly as I strolled past, flinging my scarf around my neck. As I slid my sunglasses in place, I stepped out into the warm sun, grateful the weather had held. I much preferred the weather in the fall. Summer was too hot, making it impossible to always look on point when my hair frizzed with the humidity.

“George, I would like to head to The Gallery.”

“Absolutely, miss.”
