“I saw the way you were looking at her.”

“Yeah, like she was about to become a casualty.”

“More like she was something you wanted to taste.” Lock walked over to me, his eyes dark and commanding. “But I’m telling you, don’t go there. Don’t fuck up this job.”

“Like you did with Juliette?”

“That was different.”

“In what way?”

He opened his mouth but didn’t say anything.

“That’s what I thought. And don’t worry. I’m not going there with Wren. I would rather hang myself.”

I turned and headed out of the room. I didn’t know which way the library was, but the staff was filing down the hallway, so I followed them. As the rest of the staff gathered in front of Wren, I stood at the back, waiting for further instruction from Lock.

“I would like to start by saying that we will have some guests going forward. They are my new security detail, so if you see them walking around, just ignore them and continue with your work.”

“Actually,” Lock stepped forward, “I’ll need to interview all of the staff for security purposes.”

“Is that really necessary?” Wren asked.

“Yes, and that’s non-negotiable.” He finished walking to the front of the room and took over, basically pushing Wren aside. “We’ll be implementing new security measures. All of you will need an identification card, along with a security pass to allow you access to the property. If at any time you lose your card, your access will be denied until we can get you a new one. You will also be subject to a search before entering or leaving the property. If at any time we suspect you are doing something that could endanger anyone in this family, you will be dismissed immediately. Is that understood?”

A round of yeses went up, and then Lock nodded. “Good. We’ll be around soon enough for interviews. For now, you’re dismissed.”

“Hey!” Wren said, exasperated that Lock had taken over. “That’s my job.”

“Your job is to stay out of our way and let us do our job,” Lock corrected her. “Oh, and your close protection agent is Brock,” he nodded at me. “If you need to go anywhere, Brock will accompany you.”

Her jaw dropped and anger flushed across her face. Yeah, I felt the same way. Strolling over to her, I wrapped my arm around her shoulder. “So, how about you give me a tour of the house?”

She shoved my arm away and scowled at me. “Keep your hands off me. And if you want a tour, take it. I’m not your guide.”

She turned in a huff and stormed out of the room. Edu walked over to me, grinning from ear to ear. “I think she likes you.”

“I was getting that vibe too.”

WREN

I walked into the dining room, taking my place at the far end of the table. My father had already come in and was sitting at his end with his nose buried in stock reports, as usual.

“Wren, how was your day?”

“Well, I had a very unusual encounter.”

He looked up from his reports and frowned. “Such as?”

“Well, there were men that dragged me out of my charity lunch. They said they were my security detail. You wouldn’t happen to know anything about that, would you?”

“Ah, yes. I forgot about that. I hired them after the last letter came.”

I looked at him in confusion, but he didn’t catch on. “What letter?”

“The one,” he said, digging into his steak. “Don’t worry about it, sweet pea. I have it all taken care of.”
