“She was supposed to say no,” I whispered.

“I really thought she would.”

“You said she wasn’t happy! You said she’d say no!”

“You already fucking yelled at me,” he argued. “I’m sorry.”

No, I couldn’t sit back and let this happen. She didn’t really want him. Her life would be boring as hell if she continued down this path. And he didn’t really love her. She deserved someone who really wanted her. “No. No fucking way,” I snapped, flinging my door open.

I jumped out, jerking Cash across the seat as I went.

“Hey, hey, hey! I’m still attached!”

“Give me the keys!”

“I thought you could pick your way out,” he retorted, his arm still outstretched.

“I can, but I don’t have anything on me!” I yelled frantically.

“Get back in the car,” he growled.

“I need to get in there!”

“Get back in the fucking car right now!”

“I—”

“Brock!” he shouted, finally getting my attention.

I slowly turned to face him, knowing it was too late. She said yes. She was going to marry him.

“If you go barging in there right now, the only person you’re going to hurt is yourself. Besides, we still have a job to do. She’s still in danger.”

That was the only thing that broke through the insane, jealous fog in my brain. She was in danger. And if I fucked this up, I would never forgive myself. Nodding, I got back in the car, sighing as he finally unlocked the cuffs.

“Don’t make me regret this.”

He handed me the binoculars, but I couldn’t take them. I couldn’t watch the rest of her dinner, how she swooned over her gigantic ring. I sank down in the seat, contemplating how I had fucked it all up.

“She never would have said yes to me.” I thought about that huge fucking ring and then the one my mother gave me. Pulling it out of my pocket, I stared at the small diamond. It wasn’t much, but my parents didn’t have a lot when they got married. This ring symbolized their love, and I somehow thought if I told her that story—about how they had nothing but built an amazing life together—it would resonate with her. But as I sat here, I could see that nothing I had would ever be enough for her.

“She’s the one missing out,” Cash said, interrupting my thoughts.

“Doesn’t matter. It would never have worked. She’d always resent me if she said yes to me. This is the life she wants.”

“You don’t know that. Maybe she’s just scared.”

But it hit me in that moment that even if she was scared, she wasn’t willing to take a chance on me. I had risked everything for her, and she just walked away.

Man, I think you got this one wrong.

Fox’s words echoed in my head. Maybe he was right. He’d seen it from the start. It had been wishful thinking that a guy like me could win her over. Sure, we both liked good hair products and facial creams. A good spa day would always be in order, but that’s where our similarities ended. She chose money, and I would always choose happiness.

I sat through a fucking hour of dinner, refusing to look in the building. The minutes dragged on as I waited for her to emerge from the restaurant. My heart had been stomped on, but Cash was right. There was still a job to do. I had to keep her safe. And once I knew she was, I could crawl home and lick my wounds.

“I think she’s coming out.”

My head snapped to the entrance much faster than I wanted to admit. I was desperate to see her—maybe so I could see the joy on her face and finally have it resonate in my head that her decision was made.
