Brock’s voice sliced through the air, making me immediately stiffen.

“If you don’t mind, I’d like to get inside.”

“This is all your fault,” my father scowled at him. “If it weren’t for you?—”

“If it weren’t for him, we wouldn’t have all this publicity,” I cut in, not wanting to get him in any more trouble than he was already in. “It all worked out for the best.”

“I suppose,” my father grumbled. “Let’s get inside where we can discuss what really happened. I have a press conference set up for five o’clock. That’ll give you enough time to freshen up.”

I followed him inside, glancing over at Brock, but he still wouldn’t give me the time of day. I wanted a chance to talk to him, to thank him for what he did, even if it was for nothing. I couldn’t deny my time with him changed something in me. But it wasn’t enough. We lived different lives, and I could never be what he wanted.

“Brock,” I said, reaching out my hand. My fingers brushed his before he pulled away. Hurt slammed through me, but I shoved it aside. This was my life, and I wouldn’t apologize for wanting to keep it.

“I would like a damn good reason why you took my daughter,” my father said as he walked into his office.

Brock followed him in, not bothering to kiss his ass like most people did. “I followed my instincts. You hired us to protect your daughter, and that’s what I did.”

“And? What did you find?”

Brock clenched his jaw.

My father chuckled as he stared at him. “I’m assuming you found something. Otherwise, what possible reason could you have for taking her, and then returning her only a few days later?”

“We believe the night of the break-in that another person got in also.”

“You mean, besides the man I hired.”

“Exactly.”

“And why did he break in?”

“To steal something—probably off your computer.”

His eyes went to his desk, then narrowed in on Brock. “Explain.”

“Your computer isn’t connected to the internet. The only way to hack your computer is by being physically in the room.”

“And how would you prove that?”

“By checking your computer. There would be signs?—”

My father barked out a laugh. “And you think I’m going to let you snoop around on my computer?”

Brock stayed silent.

“You know what I think happened? You thought you could convince my daughter to marry you. Maybe cash in on a little payday. But here’s something you didn’t realize. My daughter is too good for you. And she would never fall for a man like you.”

I flushed bright red as I thought of all the times he’d seduced me. I crumbled under his touch, and not once had he even mentioned my money. In fact, the last thing he wanted was anything to do with it.

“Sir, my only thought when I took her was to keep her safe. As soon as I figured out what happened, I brought her home. If, in fact, a secondary threat broke in that night, whatever he stole was his objective, and he’s long gone, eliminating any threat to her life.”

“Then I guess this is where we part ways.”

“Yes, sir.”

Brock turned without giving me a second glance. I was desperate for him to look at me one last time, to feel the passion he showed me every time he looked into my eyes. But as he walked out that door, I knew I would never see him again. I had ruined whatever was between us, and while there was no other way for this to end, I found myself wishing he could still be in my life.

“I should have his ass thrown in jail,” my father snapped as soon as Brock was gone.
