CHAPTER

FORTY-FOUR

SLOAN

“I… yeah… I think I do.”

“You think?”

“Love is kind of a foreign concept for me. I’m sure Luke has filled you in on some of the details.”

She smiled. “Sometimes life hands us shitty cards.”

“Tell me about it.”

“He loves you, and I can see that you love him, too. But I can also see how scared that makes you.”

“Yeah…” I replied.

“Love is scary, though. For all of us.”

I blurted, “I just don’t want to lose him.”

“Sweetheart, you can’t lose something that isn’t yours. If you’re meant to be, nothing and no one can stop that.”

“Like soulmates? Do you believe in that?”

She made it so easy to talk to her. I didn’t feel awkward. It felt honest as if I were talking to my mom. I knew she’d have questions, so I wasn’t caught off guard by them. I also didn’t know how much Luke had shared with her about me, and I didn’t want to overshare either.

“Do you?” she countered.

“I’m not sure about that either.”

“What are you sure about?”

“That I want a future with him.”

“Sounds like you’re the only one who’s stopping you.”

I stood there dumbfounded by such a simple yet powerful statement.

“You know what, Mrs. Jameson?”

“What? And please call me Mia.”

“I think you’re on to something. How did you become so wise?”

“It comes with age. It also comes with therapy.”

She gave me a tight hug, and I followed her to the patio with a bunch of food in my hands. Once I stood by the table, Luke put his arms around me and pulled me into his chest.

“You hungry?” I asked, trying to serve him a plate of food.

“For you,” he murmured against my neck.

“That could be arranged. That’s if you can fit me in your tight schedule.”

“Well, we both know how pretty you look takin’ my dick.”
