I wonder if Neil would ever date someone as young as me?

I thought of the woman I saw him with. She looked a little younger than him, but definitely age-appropriate. Hmm.

Five o’clock passed, and the meeting in Neil’s office was still going. I prepared to leave, not knowing how much longer they were going to take. With the news of having to vacate my apartment in two months, there was a lot to arrange, and I wanted to get onto it as soon as possible.

Just as I was about to walk out the door, Neil and Daniel emerged from Neil’s office, chatting like two old buddies. I hung back to see Daniel off.

“Lovely to meet you, Amelia,” Daniel said, taking my hand in both of his.

Neil watched on with a rigid posture and pursed lips.

“Nice to meet you too,” I said.

“I hope our paths cross again soon. Maybe in Singapore.”

Not knowing how to respond, I just nodded my head.

Neil practically tore Daniel away from me and ushered him towards the door. “I’ll walk you down.”

Daniel shook his head. “No need. I can see myself out.”

“In that case, have a good evening and a comfortable flight home.”

“I’m sure I will. The private jet usually offers a modicum of comfort.”

“I’ll see you at the annual meeting.”

“Looking forward to it.” Daniel took one step through the door, then paused. “Oh, and Neil, give my regards to my sister, won’t you?”

Neil’s eyes narrowed for a flicker of a second, then he composed himself. “As you wish.”

Daniel’s perpetual smug look intensified as he walked out. Neil kept a watchful eye on him until he disappeared down the corridor.

I wonder what that was all about?

I resumed getting ready to leave.

“Before you go, can I have a word?” Neil asked.

“Sure, go ahead,” I replied.

He took a cursory glance down the empty corridor, then closed the door for good measure. I suddenly felt apprehensive. Whatever he had to say seemed serious. He leaned back against my desk with folded arms, then spoke in a lowered voice. “How long were you alone with Daniel?”

“Just for a minute. Why?”

“He didn’t do anything… untoward, I hope.”

“What? N-no. Of course not.”

Neil clenched his jaw, his expression stony. “Good. If it happens again, call me straight away. I don’t trust him around you.”

“Why not?”

“He has self-control issues around attractive young women.”

Attractive?! “I-I see.”

“He’s also just a nasty piece of work in general.”
