“Two months. That’s what I’m obligated to give you.”

“You’re kicking me out…”

“It’s well within my rights as the owner. You’ve been a good tenant, and I’d be happy to offer you a reference.”

I didn’t know what to say. I was stuck on the fact he was kicking me out.

“To tell you the truth, it would be ideal if you could leave sooner,” he said.

“You see, the thing is, I’ll be leaving the country in a few months. It will be inconvenient to have to find another place —”

“Not my problem.”

I huffed. “Fine. I’ll have to see what I can arrange. Could you send me the notice in writing?”

“Will do.”

“Thanks.”

“Okay. Ta.”

He hung up.

Oof.

I had two months to find somewhere else to live. That would cover me until the end of October. But then what? Could I get a rental without signing a one-year contract? Or would I have to get something short-term on a month-by-month basis?

My mind raced on my way back to work. I almost collided with Neil when I entered my office. He stood in the middle of the room with his back to me—but something was off about him. He turned to me. That’s when I realised he wasn’t Neil after all…

He was a stranger.

He cut a strikingly similar figure in his suit, but that’s where the similarities ended. The eyes that stared at me were small, black, and twinkling. He had sallow, textured skin and slicked-back hair. His tongue darted over thin, parched lips. He looked older than Neil, but not by much.

“Excuse me. Can I help you?” I asked.

He grinned at me, revealing stained yellow teeth. “Well, well, well. You must be Amelia Cross.”

How does he know who I am?

I forced myself to be polite, despite the creepy-crawly sensation under my skin. “Yes, I am. May I ask who you are?”

He offered his hand. “Daniel Ling.”

I knew that name.

My mind emptied of everything else upon realising that the man who stood before me was none other than Neil’s boss, the president of Zelthia Group. One of the richest and most powerful men in Asia.

Chapter Twenty-Nine

Ishook Daniel’s hand. With his snake-like features, I half expected his skin to feel scaly, but it was smooth. “Mr. Ling. It’s an honour to meet you.”

His beady eyes glinted. “And you. Neil’s new right-hand woman—a very privileged position indeed.”

His words seemed laced with hidden meaning, but all I could do was take them at face value. “Um, thank you.”

I wondered why he was here. He was a long way from Singapore, and Neil’s schedule said nothing about a visit from his boss. “Are you here to see Neil?” I asked.

“I am. Do you know when he’ll be back?”
