I folded the blanket into a neat square and placed it on my seat. Neil paid the bill. As we left the restaurant, I shivered, the cold breeze whipping my bare shoulders and arms. Neil’s suit jacket was around me before I could protest. His body heat lingered in the fabric as I slipped my arms through the oversized sleeves. We fell into step side by side.

“So, you’re lending me your clothes after all,” I said.

“I never said I wouldn’t,” Neil replied.

I couldn’t hide the giddy smile which burst onto my face. Neil smiled too.

We passed shops, restaurants, hotels, and offices before reaching our apartment building. Neil held the door for me as we entered the lobby. No one joined us in the lift. Neil pressed the buttons for both my floor and his, clarifying that he wasn’t about to invite me back to his place. I was too overwhelmed to feel disappointed.

The door opened on my floor.

“Good night, Milly,” Neil murmured.

“Good night,” I said, biting my lip. “Thank you so much for dinner. I had a lovely time.”

“Me too.”

I was about to step out into the corridor when I realised I was still wearing Neil’s suit jacket. I stood in the door’s path to keep it from closing as I shrugged the jacket off. “Wait. Before I forget. Here. Or else I’ll probably try to wash it and ruin it like your sweater.”

Neil accepted his jacket, his fingers grazing mine. He guided it back onto his broad shoulders. As he smoothed the lapels, his gaze fell upon my collarbone, exposed where my dress strap had slipped down yet again. Before I could fix it, he reached out and hooked his fingers under the thin strap. He painstakingly slid it back into place, his touch scorching my skin as it trailed over my bare shoulder and collarbone. I trembled in response.

Neil seemed hypnotised throughout the action. Then he suddenly snapped out of it. He started to pull his hand away, but like an automatic reflex, I covered his hand with my own, pressing it flush to my shoulder.

He did not resist.

I looked into his eyes, and I knew I had broken him.

Chapter Fifty-Three

Neil rubbed his thumb back and forth against my collarbone. “Melia,” he breathed. “This might come as a surprise to you, but there’s a limit to my willpower. You’re making this very hard for me. Do you understand?”

The seductive quality of his voice reverberated in my bones. I couldn’t back down now. I was too far gone. “There’s something I need you to fix in my apartment,” I said.

Neil’s lips curved into a devilish smirk that made my insides clench. “Then I better take a look.”

I led him to my door on shaky legs, my heart pounding an erratic beat. I fumbled trying to enter the code, inputting it wrong twice before the lock released.

As soon as we entered, the first thing Neil did was push the strap of my dress aside and sink his lips onto the spot still sensitive from his touch. I threw my head back in unbridled rapture as he moaned into my flesh, causing vibrations down my spine. He held my waist while he nipped and sucked a path to the crook of my neck, then the bottom of my ear. He trailed rough kisses along my jaw before claiming my lips. My knees buckled. I clung to him for support. Our mouths moved together, slowly at first, then gaining fervour, the silky slide of his tongue against mine igniting a hot ache in me. My fingers twisted in his hair while his hands roamed my body, tracing every curve and contour through the thin fabric of my dress. I nibbled his lower lip and felt him smile against my mouth before pulling back to look at me. His eyes burned with unconcealed desire as they lingered on my lips, my chest, my hips—all the parts of me he couldn’t openly admire under normal circumstances. “You’re so beautiful, Melia. I’ve wanted you for so long.”

He closed in on me again, his hands resuming their exploration, gliding up and down my sides, over my backside, hips, waist, and stomach. I matched his movements with my own, gripping his shoulders, feeling his muscular chest and arms, relishing his solid form pressed against me.

He let up only to take my hand and tug me towards my bedroom. I followed him, powerless to resist his magnetic pull. We stood beside the bed, foreheads pressed together, his ragged breaths mingling with mine. He pushed the other strap of my dress down, both shoulders fully exposed now. He massaged them and dusted them with kisses.

“Do you have a shoulder fetish?” I asked.

“I have a fetish for every part of your body. Especially here.” He brushed my hair back and pressed a tender kiss behind my earlobe. “You have the most delicious little freckle… I only see it when you wear your hair up. I always look for it.”

“I didn’t even know I had it.”

“It’s incredibly sexy.” He nuzzled the spot while he toyed with the hem of my dress, then slipped his hands underneath, running them up my bare outer thighs, alighting all my nerve endings in his wake. “Are you wearing them?” he murmured in my ear.

“What?”

“Those white panties.”

“White…?” I gasped. “You mean…?”

The only time he could have seen my underwear was when I accidentally left them on his bathroom floor. But he hadn’t been home then. Had he?
