“We’ll be there,” I promised.

He closed the door, shutting out the sights and noises of a chaotic world.

“Alone at last.” I met Dash’s gaze, and took his hand.

He flashed the smile that curled my toes. He looked pale and he’d been shot again, and still I thought he was the hottest man on the planet.

The engine revved up and the vehicle began to move.

“You’re too far way.” I undid my belt. “Permission to come aboard.”

“You don’t need permission.” He scooted over. How I fitted myself into the narrow stretcher and in between all those tubes and wires, I never knew, but when I was done, we reclined together.

“That was quite the birthday party.” I turned my head slightly and brushed my lips over his. “Let’s not do that again.”

“Agreed.” His eyes gleamed like honey beneath the overhead light.

“Do you have a fever?” I set my palm on his forehead. “Are you in pain?”

“I don’t have a fever and I’m pumped full of painkillers, so no pain.” He took my hand and squeezed it. “You?”

“The bleeding stopped a while back and I’m bandaged, medicated, and pain free.”

“Good.” He sighed. “I’m sorry that your birthday sucked.”

“At least we figured some things out.” I rolled my eyes. “My uncle. Crap. Why didn’t I see that coming?”

“For the same reason I didn’t spot Shaw’s betrayal,” Dash said. “We were trying to take care of our people and those two? They werenotour people.”

“We still have so many questions that need answers.” I let out a sigh. “How did my uncle manage to get into the officewithout being seen or caught by the cameras to put the poison in my lipstick and kill my father? Was Rivera innocent or did he facilitate that? What damning information did my father have on my uncle’s employer and where is it hidden in the house? What were these secrets my uncle was babbling about and what’s the NWO up to?”

“We have a solid start with Li.” Dash took my hand. “We’ll run with it. We’ll search the house and figure out what’s going on. We’ll get our answers. You’ll see.”

“I hope so.” I bit down on my lips, fighting the tears and dread that came with asking the question. “Do you think my sisters are alive?”

“Arthur wanted to know where they were very badly.” Dash squeezed my fingers. “To me, this means they haven’t found them yet. We still have a chance to get to them first.”

I let out a sigh, hoping and praying Dash was right.

“Chin up, darling, you were so brave.” He lifted my good hand to his mouth and kissed my knuckles. “And, it’s still your birthday. I didn’t get to give you your gift.”

I drew back. “You got me a gift?”

“Of course I have a gift for you on your birthday. I’ve had it on me all night. I’ve been waiting for the right moment, but those were hard to come by.”

“No kidding.” I flashed him a quick smile.

“Hang on.” He rummaged beneath the covers, pulled something out of his pocket, and opened the little box before he showed it to me.

I gasped at the sight of the gorgeous emerald cut diamond ring sitting pretty in the box. “You kept it?” I squeaked. “All these years? You had it?”

“I kept it.”

We both stared at the ring in its box.

“The first time I gave you this ring and asked you to marryme was fast and businesslike.” Dash recalled. “Nix and I were going on deployment. We were called at the last minute. This time around is different. I’ve been tossing words in my head. Will you hear me out?”

“Of course.”
