“You got him to put on a tux,” Brady smiles and tips his chin in the general direction of Carter. “I’ve only seen him in a suit twice, and that was for funerals.”

I say nothing, but I smile and then Brady looks at me again as I retrieve our drinks from the bar. He takes in what I have in my hands and smiles again.

“You know if you break his heart, I’ll kill you.”

I nod and my smile broadens. That is approval. “I would expect nothing less.” His eyes are smiling and with this small return to normalcy with him, the last piece of the puzzle snaps into place.

“Thank you for looking out for him,” he says, his tone serious and appreciative.

I nod. “I believe it just might be the other way around.”

Trusting another human with your heart is risky. It’s the biggest risk we ever take, isn’t it? I didn’t give Carter my heart so much as he just up and stole it. And I’m okay with that. The closer those long legs get to me, the more relaxed I feel. The rest of the world falls away, and I surrender. All angst evaporates. I’m done fighting. Not just with Carter, but with myself. These feelings I’ve been fighting so hard to suppress are fully embedded now and I’ll take them.

I put our drinks down on the table next to me.

Carter’s eyes widen when I place my hands along his stubbly jaw. I pull his face to mine and kiss him. A sweet soft warm kiss in the middle of a ballroom full of people that I’ve forgotten even exist.

“I love you.”

Chapter thirty-three

It’s not that I’m not a morning person, it’s just that… I’m not a morning person.

But Davey is, and while that is sort of annoying, knowing that he is also a coffee person means I wake to coffee already made and I had no idea what a luxury that was until I started waking up with him.

Madison leaves his side for a few precious moments to come to me, all wiggly and smiling. I grab those ears and kiss her head.

Davey doesn’t even speak. He already knows. Just let me get one sip into my veins, then, then you can say good morning. Now, if you are waking me up with your dick, that’s a different story. Nothing needs to be spoken in that instance, anyway.

I sigh as the coffee fills me with warmth. I kiss Davey on the top of the head, much as I had Madison, before finally plopping down on the couch next to him.

“Do you have any idea how nice it is to wake to coffee already made?”

He laughs. “You’re welcome. You do know they make coffee makers with timers you can set and then there it is all ready for you when you wake.”

“I don’t think those coffee makers come with a hot blond.”

I rumple my hands through his messy, and much shorter, hair.

“Still hate it?” He asks.

“I’ve never hated it.” And I don’t. It’s not like the cut is short, but it is much shorter, and layered, so no more ponytail or man-bun. It is equally nice when clutched in my fingers, though.

“You just hate that it makes me look younger than you now.” D winks at me.

I sigh because that is the damn truth. “You’ve always looked younger than me. This just makes it worse.”

I lean my head back against the couch and stare at the ceiling. “I don’t have business cards.”

“Wow, that’s random. Do you want business cards?”

I sit up and look at him. “I don’t know. But last night when Devyn was introducing me to people, I didn’t have a business card to give them.”

“I’m sure all you need to do is ask and someone can have them ordered in a flash. I know Levi considers you part of Natasha Barnes LLC.”

I nod. He does.

“Is that not what you want?”
