I don’t know how I truly feel about him being here, or knowing where I live without giving him the address, but I guess I do know more about him than I’m letting on. So I guess you could say we’re even.

I open the door to Nevada leaning one arm on the door frame, taking up all the room. He’s freshly showered, the scent of pine needles and that cognac, smokey scent that I can’t get enough of permeates my senses. It’s all I could smell on myself last night, hence why I did not shower until this morning. I know. I’ve questioned my sanity on more than one occasion since last night, and I’m still questioning it now.

He’s smiling, of course. It reminds me a little of the cat who got the cream.

“Mornin’ Mama.”

“Why do you call me that?” I fold my arms over my chest protectively.

“Because you’re older than me and it’s hot.”

“So it’s not a weird fetish?”

The ridge between his eyebrows pinches together. “Weird fetish? The only fetish I have is you, Estelle. On a platter.”

Why do I only hear the pounding of blood in my ears? I force myself to not outwardly groan. He’s not that good. Okay, that’s a lie. He is that good, but he doesn’t need the ego trip.

“Did it take you all morning to think of that one?”

He ignores me, looking over my shoulder into my apartment. “You gonna let me in?”

“I’m busy, what do you want?”

“I told you, got some shit to tell you. Just got back from the clubhouse and met with Cash.”

I take a breath, then open my door wider and step aside. I’m not in the business of having private conversations out in the hallway, and if my neighbors see me, they’ll have something to gossip about. Seeing Nevada in his MC cut won’t exactly fare well for either of us. I close the door behind him as he steps in.

He whistles low between his teeth as he looks around. “Holy shit, nice crib.”

I roll my lips. Crib? Do people really talk like that these days?

“Thanks.”

“Nice neighborhood. Checked out the security. Gated in the city, I like that.”

I give him a pensive look. “I already checked that out before I bought the place.” Of course, it was a number one priority.

“You’re tidy.”

I walk to the kitchen to turn the dishwasher on. “I don’t have a lot of stuff. I like to keep things neat and uncluttered.” Why am I explaining this to him?

“Me too.”

I glance up at him, surprised. “You do?”

He leans on the counter, his smile lazy. “Does that surprise you that I’m not a slob?”

I push the switch and the washer starts. I switch tact. We don’t need to go getting all sentimental just because we had sex once. “What are you doing here?”

“I told ya, I’m comin’ with you to Mississippi, and Rock and Jett said they’d visit the Viper’s Engine and sniff around while we’re gone.”

“You’re not coming with me.”

“Like hell I’m not. You can’t go there alone.”

“I won’t be. I have Kyle and Halo…”

“Who the fuck is Kyle?”
