My face heats. I shove another bite of muffin between my lips and pivot away from him.

Alex watches it all with a smirk on his handsome face. He hands Gabe a different cup, their hands meeting right in front of me. Close enough to touch. I’m flanked. Bracketed. Surrounded.

Cocooned.

A girl could get used to this.

“Black,” Alex informs his friend.

“Like my soul?” Gabe quips.

“Nothing’s as dark as your soul.” Alex’s tone is dry and good-humored.

It’s rare that I have people in my personal space. Definitely not two men: one shirtless and the other almost.

Gabe groans and takes another long sip. “So good. Where’d you get this?”

“Glad that one passes inspection,” I say, scarfing down another bite. Seriously, I want to marry this muffin.

“I just wasn’t expecting so much milk. Or nuts.”

I snort and almost choke on a blueberry. My throat burns, and my eyes water as I cough. Two strong hands pat my back.

I slap a hand over my mouth, smothering the coughing fit.

That wasn’t funny enough to die for. But having both their hands on me? That’s a different story.

I manage to swallow correctly and murmur a thank you, while silently praying that they don’t stop touching me.

Good grief, Katherine. Keep it in your pants.

The little devil on my shoulder smirks with glee. You’re not wearing pants.

“You’re not supposed to breathe muffins,” Gabe teases. He drops his hand first. I don’t miss his touch. Really, I don’t.

How could I?

Liar.

Maybe all my confusion and wild emotions are from sleep deprivation. Yeah, that must be it. Except, I’ve been attracted to Alex for a long time, and the way he’s rubbing slow circles beneath my shoulder blade is doing dangerous things to my deprived pussy.

The quiet stretches. Then Alex drops his hand and clears his throat.

They discuss the local coffee scene, and I nibble away on my muffin. Gabe’s not wrong. The coffee is excellent. And I don’t think it’s the hunger talking.

I glance from Gabe back to Alex. The way he’s taking care of us warms me from the inside out. Why isn’t this weird? Why does it feel like we’re at camp, sharing secrets and making lifelong bonds?

If only.

I might be totally relaxed and smitten with my breakfast, but the world is out there, ready to press in. My phone is probably full of messages, but I’m not about to burst this bubble with reality. If only we could spend the summer here hiding out. Days on the beach. Weekend strolling through town. Nights?—

Better not to go there, Katherine.

Too late, though. This morning’s kiss is fresh on my lips, and I can’t help but want another. Want more.

“What’s put that look on your face, Beauty?” Alex murmurs.

I glance up at him and find him closer. Leaning into my space, so close I could lift my lips and steal another kiss. I want that more than I want to finish my lemon blueberry love affair. More than all the lattes in the land.
