“Wha—” Her lips are swollen, and her eyes dart around, confused.

I squeeze her hip to let her know I still want her, still want the connection between us and that I hate to step away from her. But it’s probably for the best. Because no woman has ever brought me this close to losing my head.

“That’ll be our coffee.”

KATHERINE

“Coffee?”

He ordered coffee?

Ohmygod. He’s too good to be true, and I think his kisses fried my brain. Also, why is he shirtless?

Oh yeah, I’m wearing his spare shirt. I glance down at the white cotton tee that hits my mid-thigh.

My stomach grumbles, and Alex huffs a laugh.

“Sit tight, Beauty.”

When he turns away, I lift my fingers to my lips. Holy smokes.

That man can kiss.

And the endearments. They’re going to my head. Gah. . . he makes me want. . .

Everything.

The truth hums through my veins, and I take a deep, steadying breath. This all feels like a dream. Part nightmare, part fantasy.

The front door shuts, and on autopilot, I move toward the promised caffeine. Alex saunters back into the kitchen, a cardboard tray of paper cups in one hand and a brown paper bag in the other. The rich scent hits me, and I dive forward.

“Wasn’t sure what you like, so I took a guess.” He plucks two cups from the collection and holds them up. “Black.” He lifts the last one. “And a hazelnut latte. There’s cream and sugar in the bag.”

I woke up worrying about my skin and my reputation, and he’s keeping us alive.

I reach for the latte. “You’re saving my life.” I gulp a long, hot sip. The elixir heats me from the inside out and I sigh, eyes closed, as I savor it.

“Something tells me I might be saving my own life,” he murmurs.

I open my eyes and blink at him. Is he. . . is Alex Hunt flirting with me?

I think he is.

He’s got a hip propped against the countertop, completely at ease.

His lips pull up in a smirk. He’s so relaxed in his own skin, it’s addictive. His calm radiates, and I soak it in until it’s a part of me.

God, he’s gorgeous. Broad chest, a smattering of dark hair, and chiseled muscles that I want to lick. And bite.

I want to kiss him again. And lose myself in his arms. Forget all about last night and that stupid auction and my mother and my grandfather’s will. I just want to exist in this moment with him and not think about anything else.

I tear my gaze away and stare out at the ocean. The sun’s behind the clouds, and it’s drizzling again. The weather adds to the cozy vibe, and I don’t want this to end.

A crinkling sound draws my attention away from the window. I take another greedy sip from my cup. It was a good guess; I’m a die-hard latte fan.

Alex slides the bag across the counter. “Ladies first.”
