Chapter Thirty-Nine

Heaven and Hell

Nova did not remember much at first. It was like falling asleep in the car when you were a kid and then waking up in your bed. No clue how you ended up in bed, other than an assumed trust that your parents carried you.

When the fog slightly cleared, Linc was parking the dirty, old pickup truck in the lot of the clubhouse. Nova turned her head and looked at Linc.

“We have to be here right now, darling,” Linc said. “Protection. You know you’re safe here.”

“I threw up in the basement,” Nova said. “A lot. I was so scared and angry. I’m sorry if my breath smells bad.”

“Fuck, darling,” Linc said. He reached across the truck and touched Nova’s face. “All this going on and you’re worried about your stinky breath, huh?”

Nova’s chin quivered.

“We’re going to go inside and get a drink, then you’re going to take a long, hot shower, Nova. The clothes you’re wearing, they’re going to get thrown out. Burned. Gone forever.”

“What about that house? Evidence and stuff. Linc…”

“Shh, darling. It’s all handled. We’ll handle it. You have nothing to worry about.”

“That guy…”

“He’s gone.”

“Gone?”

“Dead.”

Nova sucked in a breath. “He just… he ran me off the road, Linc. He shot at me. It all happened so fast.”

“You did nothing wrong, darling. You stayed alive. This is on me. This is because of me. They wanted to get to me through you.”

“He kept talking about getting paid. Then someone showed up. I could only hear muffed voices. It was right before you showed up.”

“Okay, darling. You need to get in a hot shower and wash it all away.”

“Yeah. Definitely. And that drink too. For sure.”

“The entire fucking bottle.”

“Yeah,” Nova said.

She smiled. Only for a second. Linc got out of the truck, walked around, opened her door and reached for her. Nova basically just fell into his arms.

She forced herself to walk to the clubhouse. Physically she was okay. The kidnapper did not hurt her. He just threatened her and Nova trusted that Linc would save her. Her mind though…

Virus came running toward them.

“You got her! She’s okay!”

“Hold the door for us,” Linc ordered. “Lock it behind you. Wait for the rest of the guys to get back.”

“I’ll send Dolph down to the gate,” Virus said.

Linc nodded.

Nova set the pace as they walked, moving but not fast. There was something about the smell of the clubhouse that got to Nova. That manly stench. Leather. Booze. Women. Sweat. It was like home for Nova. Her eyes filled with tears.
