“And you’ve always seen right through them.” She turned to face her brother. “What do you think I should do?”

“First, you need to have a bath.”

She kicked him half-heartedly. “Answer me.”

“I’m not going to tell you what to do with your life, Chinna.” Ram sat up, cracking his neck like an animal to relieve the stress built up there. “That’s for you to decide. Whatever it is you decide though, I’ll support you.”

“I have to go back,” she said quietly.

“You don’t have to do anything,” he snapped, his back going up immediately.

“I can’t divorce Agastya Kodela.”

“You can divorce God if you want to. He’s just a man.” Ram had his lawyer glare on. Before they could get any further, someone knocked on Veda’s bedroom door.

“Akka, your friend has come.” The helper at the door said in Telugu.

Before Veda could react, Priyanka shouldered the door open and walked in. “I don’t care if you don’t want to see me. I’m already here and now, you’re stuck with me,” she announced.

“Hi Ram,” she added belatedly.

“Hi Priyanka.” He smiled and nodded at her. “Nice to see you. I’ll leave you girls to it then.”

Priyanka surveyed Veda with her hands on her hips as the door shut behind Ram. “You need a bath,” she observed.

“Fuck off,” Veda grumbled, lying down and pulling the comforter over her head.

Priyanka yanked it right off.

“Oh no, sister-in-law of mine, we are not hibernating anymore. Get up.”

“I don’t want to get up.”

“Listen cry baby-“

“Cry baby?” Veda shot off the bed in outrage. “Your brother married me so he could hold me over my father’s head like a Damocles sword!”

“Boo fucking hoo. My father forced me to marry a man who abandoned me in a bloody bus stop.”

They stared at each other in horrified silence before bursting into laughter.

“God, we’re a pair!” Veda gasped.

When the hysteria finally subsided, Veda rested her head on Priyanka’s shoulder. “What am I going to do, Priya?”

“What do you want to do? More specifically, what do you want?”

“I want him.”

“Then go get him, sister-in-law of mine. Just make sure there is adequate amount of grovelling involved. His, not yours.”

They lapsed into silence again before Priyanka said, “Also…”

“Also?”

“Could you have a bath first? I don’t think the man can grovel if you fumigate him.”
