“Don’t you have work?” she asked, knowing she had a morning practice session. She’d have to bind her feet before she danced today.

Agastya groaned, pushing himself up, propping his head on one elbow and glaring at her. “Can you not keep quiet for one minute?”

“I was quietly thinking,” she informed him. “And then you decided to crankily interrupt my thoughts.”

“And why do you feel the need for these thoughts?” He practically spat the words at her.

Veda arched a brow at him. “Not a morning person, are you?”

Not bothering to answer, Agastya flopped back on the bed, glaring at the ceiling and clearly giving up on trying to go back to sleep.

“Agastya?” Veda murmured.

“Hmm?” he replied, still sounding like a cranky bear.

“Do you want kids?”

He rolled his head to the side, looking annoyed. “Right now? No.”

Veda laughed, the sound flowing through the room and making his lips tug upward in response.

“In general.”

Agastya turned towards her, resting his head on a bent arm. “Yes. I mean, I always assumed it was a given. Study, work, get married, have two kids, grow old, die.”

“Only you would have a life plan that includes death!”

“It’s not so much a life plan as a life progression,” he argued, pompously.

“Do you want to have children now?” she asked, a thread of anxiety slipping out in her words.

Agastya frowned. “I don’t know, Veda. I assume that’s a decision we’ll make together.”

Her heart expanded in her chest until it felt like it was all she was…all heart.

“Really?” she asked.

Agastya’s frown deepened. “Of course. Who else is going to decide? We’re the ones having a child. We will decide when, where and how. Together.”

Veda beamed. “Thank you.”

“Thank you? What kind of an asshole do you think I am? I’d just impregnate you without asking if that’s what you wanted?”

“Well, no,” she acknowledged. “But family pressure would play a part. And like Guruma said, you’re Agastya Kodela.”

“Could you please stop referring to me with my full name?” he asked. “It’s annoying.”

“I even think of you like that in my head,” she said honestly. “You’re Agastya Kodela. I mean, you’re you. You and your name carry weight.”

“Not with you. Not in this relationship.” His eyes turned serious and thoughtful. He stared at her. “No one is going to force you to have a child unless you’re ready. Not my family, not anyone else. Not even your Guruma will decide when you have a child, now or later. Do you understand Veda?”

She stared at him, that weightless, breathless feeling coming back.

“Veda.” He gripped her chin with his fingers, his gaze searching her face. “Do you understand?”

She nodded, his hand bobbing up and down with her chin in its firm grasp. “Guruma said you need an heir.”

“You can tell your Guruma to worry about dance and your performance. She can leave our family planning to us.”
