“He’s worried about his contract—”

“Let’s go.”

We had spent the night curled up, talking about our future and how excited we were to start our own family. A family that would differ vastly from the ones we had come from.

It had been refreshing and relieving to get everything out in the open and make a plan for exactly how we wouldn’t be like any of them.

But it had left me feeling raw.

Mac had to be feeling that, too.

Chapter Twenty-One

Mac

“What’s this?” I picked up the stack of papers sitting on my custom retreat jersey.

I scanned the top page and my chest tightened.

“What? Is it not enough, Savage?” Coach Locke asked, his brows so knitted his eyes almost disappeared.

“Not enough?” I repeated, letting the words in front of me sink in. “Why wouldn’t it be enough?”

The Evergreens wanted me. Really wanted me. It was a contract for five years and seven million a year. These were numbers I dreamed about when I signed on as a rookie. Numbers I didn’t think the Evergreens would give me.

“We’ve been waiting to hear from you. Figured you needed some time to decide—”

“This is my first time seeing this.”

“What?” Coach Locke paused in the doorway. “When you wouldn’t answer our calls, I told them to give you some time to decide—”

“You called? Where’s a pen?” I scrambled to check my pockets even though I literally never had a pen on me.

“So you decided then?” Coach Locke asked.

“I thought there was no offer—”

He shook his head and handed me a pen. “You’re our best player.”

“I lost the cup.”

“Half the teams that go to the playoffs lose.” He smirked. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“Where’s Julie?”

“Eagerly waiting for you to give her those papers.”

I could have kissed him, but I still couldn’t believe the team wanted to keep me. I didn’t need a scandal with the coach.

Rushing down the hall, I pulled out my phone and called Em.

She picked up on the first ring.

“Is Bash by you?”

“Yes, putting you on speaker—”

I counted to five, barely holding on until I heard the change in volume. “I stopped by the arena to pick up our things for the retreat and there was a contract waiting for me—”
