Bunny stopped walking. She stood and stared at me then lowered her eyes to the ground.
“Hold ya head up, mama. Don’t regret fucking and ducking on me now.” I jested.
She laughed and mushed me. “Shut up! I-I guess I didn’t think about the consequences of you not returning as much. You talk a lot of mess, so I never thought about you not having a plan to come back when it’s done.”
“Oh, I have a plan to return, but if the plan just so happens to fail, I want you and Rabbit to be straight. St. Thomas is still in the states, but it’ll be far away from him and away from anybody who knows you.”
She looked off as her eyes went to Makari.
“Mr. Ahmad! You see me?” she yelled excitedly.
“I see you, kid!” I told her, smiling as she circled the playground area. My eyes went back to Bunny who looked worried.
“Why the long face, bun?”
“It’s just crazy that in just five days of us knowing one another, I feel like I dragged you into something that has nothing to do with you. I—we should have never had sex because now, I feel some type of way about you going and risking your life for someone you barely even know.”
“You feeling different about me now?” I smirked. “Wow, imagine what a little dick could do for you.”
“It’s not funny,” she said, barely above a whisper.
“Look, baby, I’m a calculated man. I plan and execute my plays before I make them. I study my targets and get the drop on every little detail about them so that I know how to play the game. It’s chess, Bunny. It’s a strong ‘if’ that I don’t make it back, but like I said, I’ma set you up nice so that you can live your life and protect your offspring.”
Tears gathered in her eyes and I sighed. I probably shouldn’t have brought this up, but I wanted her to know and to be prepared for anything that came her way.
“This is no way to live,” she said softly.
“It’s not, but it’s all we got right now. I’m going to arrange for your people to come see you after we leave here… Would that make you feel better?”
“It would… But it still won’t stop me from worrying about you and if Slim will find me.”
“Aye, let’s just enjoy the day. Don’t worry about nothing. I got you.”
She nodded as we continued to watch Rabbit be carefree.

Tears streamed down my face as I stood on the porch watching the blacked-out SUV coming down the road. My parents were almost within my grasp. Ahmad made a call to one of his people to have them picked up and driven out. My parents had been more than a little skeptical about riding with a stranger, but I guessed their desire to see me and their grandbaby superseded that.
It had been six months since their last visit to Cali. I was overdue for hugs and kisses. Beside me, Makari was just as excited.
“Mommy! It’s Nana and Papa!”
She was jumping and bouncing around. The little squeal she let out made me happy and sad. I hated this was how she had to see two of the people she loved most. Around this time, my parents would have been flying to Cali for a visit. Even that wasn’t good enough. We should have been able to take a short drive and see them, but I ruined that when I stole Slim’s money.
The SUV came to a stop. As soon as the door opened, Kari was running down the steps to my father. He grinned wide as he scooped her up effortlessly.
“Papa, I missed you!”
“Papa missed you too, princess.”
“Nana!” Kari scrambled out of his arms and into my mother’s.
“There’s nana’s sweet pea! Oh, you’re getting so big!”
