“Our paths got crossed and he made a threat. That’s all the information I’m willing to disclose. It’s imperative that I find him.”

“Nala, right?”

I looked at him and frowned. “What?”

“Word is, his girl left him and took some money from him. Dude been looking for shorty for like six years. The nigga is hellbent on getting her back… I’m sure to get his money back. But shit, after six years, I know lil mama ran right through that paper. He may as well give that shit up.”

“What else do you know?”

“That he’s married and got like three kids now, but by different women. I don’t know where he lays his head, but I know he owns an after-hours spot in Backwoods, Georgia called The Dope Spot… It’s over on Riscade and Blount Street.”

“Good looking.” I held out my fist for a pound as I stood.

“You riding dolo?”

“For now. I’ll hit you when I need you.”

“A’ight. Hit me up.”

“Will do,” I said, heading back to my car. He didn’t have any information on me, not even what I looked like, so the task of finding and killing him was going to be a breeze. I just hoped with me putting my life at risk for Bunny, that it would be worth all this shit in the end.

Lila (Nala)

As soon as Play left the house, I powered on the burner phone. My first thought was to call 9-1-1, but he already said the call couldn’t be traced. It wasn’t like I knew where the hell we were anyway to direct them to me.

“Kari, Mommy is gonna step outside to make a call, okay?”

“Okay, Mommy.”

I hobbled over to the front door and typed in the code. Immediately the locks disengaged. I stepped out, leaving it slightly ajar. Defeat coursed through me as I dialed the number to my job. My supervisor answered on the first ring.

“Greenwood Memorial. This is Marina speaking.”

“Marina… it’s Lila.”

“Lila! Oh my God! Are you okay? We’ve been trying to reach you! There’s a missing person’s report out on you! Your nanny has been a frantic mess. She went to your house and found the door unlocked. She told the police it looked like a struggle. Your face is all over the news. We thought you’d been kidnapped.”

“I’m fine. I’m sorry I haven’t called or been to work. I had an emergency and had to leave town in a rush.”

“Without your purse or anything?”

Shit. I forgot all about that.

“Like I said, it was an emergency. I promise I’m okay. I don’t know when I’ll be back. I just need you to put in all the vacation time I have.”

For as long as I’d been working at Greenwood Memorial, I hadn’t taken a vacation. I had a shitload of time saved up.

“All of it?” Marina asked.

“All of it. If things change, I’ll let you know.”

“Well… okay. I’m glad you’re safe. You are safe, right?”

“Yes.”

She was quiet for a moment. “Okay. Well, please call an update me. It was good to hear from you.”
