He knew there was a slight chance he would fuck up his whole future, but she was an obsession, and if he didn’t feed it, it would drive him crazy. He needed to concentrate on the military and put his whole self into it.

Jared decided to keep the car parked down the street, walked nonchalantly to her house, and rang the bell. He heard her run down the stairs and open the door.

Fuck, didn’t she know some bad men could easily hurt her? was the first thing that entered his mind. He almost snorted. What did he think he was going to do? He was going to fuck her and then leave without looking back, and he knew it would hurt her.

He planted his boot against the door to prevent it from closing. “Hi, Skye.” He liked the stunned shock on her face, and if he wasn’t mistaken, the way her eyes lit, she still wanted him but was fighting it.

“Jared, what are you doing here?”

He smiled. “Sugar. Ask me to come in.”

“Absolutely not. My mom isn’t home.”

“I know, that’s why it’s a good idea.”

He could see her apprehension grow and had to put a stop to it, or he’d never get anywhere.

“I’ve come to you here because you made it impossible for me to get my hands on you at school.”

“Exactly. I don’t want to talk to you. You’re a mean bully, and I don’t have time for you.”

He studied her for a moment. “I know you still want me.”

She sputtered out a laugh. “You arrogant asshole.”

He smirked. “I’m just telling you the way I see it. I want you, too.”

She paused, and he knew he was finally getting through her walls. “I’ve wanted you since the first week of school. I would stare at you over the top of my book so no one would notice.” That was the truth. He’d always found her attractive. He just didn’t think there was a chance to get in her panties.

She looked doubtful.

“Really. You like to wear this white blouse with tiny flowers on it. I loved seeing you in that. You looked so feminine.”

He could tell he startled her, but it was the truth. “There’s a pair of jeans with holes in them that you girls liked to wear, but I hated you in them.”

“Why?”

“Because they cup your ass tightly, and it makes every man turn to watch you walk away.” He slid his foot in another inch. “Please. I needed to see you one more time before I left.”

“You would have seen me at the graduation ceremony. I’ll be going because I have a few friends I want to see.”

He shook his head. “I’m not going. I’m leaving for boot camp in the morning.”

Jared liked the fact that it made her sad. Not only because he could use it toward getting her in bed, but he liked knowing at least one person would miss him.

Chapter Five

“Why so soon?” Skye asked. Her chest felt tight, and her eyes stung with tears. She knew he was going to leave. She just didn’t know it would be so soon.

Jared shrugged. “Because I need to get settled before boot camp starts in a few days.”

“But you’ll be back?” she asked.

He shook his head. “No. Even if I stay alive, I’m almost certain I’ll never come back here.”

God, she hadn’t even considered him dying. The fact that she would never know what happened to him ravaged her.

He gently pushed on the door. “Babe, this is our last chance to be together.”
