The endearment shocked her and she pulled back.

“Kiss me,” she whispered.

He obliged, wrapping one hand around the back of her neck, leaning down to meld his lips with hers.

The sound of sirens reached them, and they broke apart to wait for the cavalry to arrive.

Epilogue

Two Months Later

Marnie smoothed down her skirt before entering the restaurant. She had no idea why nerves were attacking her. No doubt because of the talk she wanted to have with Reece. The hostess smiled at her.

“Welcome,” she said warmly.

“Hi, I’m meeting someone. His name is Reece Remington.”

“Oh, yes,” she said. “Please follow me.”

The swank ambiance wrapped around her as they threaded their way through the interior. Deep-green and burgundy accents softened the industrial aesthetic. Small table lamps lent a soft glow. In the center stood a floor-to-ceiling wine-racking system, so tall that the person on the inside used a lift to reach the bottles at the top.

As she approached the table where Reece waited, he stood to greet her and gave her a kiss on her cheek as he held her chair out.

“You look beautiful,” he said.

She looked him over, admiring how his suit molded to his shoulders. The material molded to his bulging biceps. “So do you,” she murmured.

He smiled and sat down across from her. “How did the interview go? Are we celebrating?”

Excitement flowed through her. After Reece had rescued her from Dan, she’d taken a hard look at her life. She ended up talking with Rebecca and her sister agreed to help pay for their mother’s care. She’d also decided to quit the boring data entry and medical billing jobs she disliked to take a fresher course on her business management degree.

“You are looking at the newly employed assistant manager of The Seaplane.”

A wide smile spread across his mouth. “Congratulations, babe. Although, I had no doubt you’d get it.”

“No doubt, huh?”

“Yeah. Because you’re incredibly smart. Fearless. You have a lot of sass…”

“Don’t you forget it, mister.”

He chuckled. “It’s definitely time for wine now.”

Happiness flooded her and she held out her hand to him. Surprise lit his eyes and he took hold, curling his fingers around hers.

“Reece,” she started softly. “We started out a little rocky, but I like this. I like dating you.”

He ran his thumb over the soft spot between her thumb and index finger. “Same.”

“I was thinking we could make it official.”

“Yeah? I’d like that.”

He crooked a finger from his other hand, telling her to come closer. She leaned over the table and he did the same. Their lips met and clung together. Excitement raced along her nerves and anticipation caused her panties to become damp. She was always in a near constant state of arousal around him.

“So, boyfriend?” she asked.

“I wish there was a more grown-up word, but yeah. You mean a lot to me, Marnie, and I think we’re heading toward something life-changing.”
