“What happened?”

Ludovico clenched his fists, even if he didn’t open his eyes.

“My father, the capo. He took a liking to beating me and Claudio. My brother simply took it, but I refused.”

Gigi swallowed. She was uncertain what to say when Ludovico abruptly sat up in bed. He pierced her with his gaze.

“I murdered him.”

Her hand flew to her mouth.

“Your father?”

He nodded. “It was me or him. He came at me with that leather belt, and I kept my knife hidden. Slipped it right under his ribs. I can still see the blood bathing my hands.” Ludovico shook his head. “Anyhow, I found out later that all along that had been what he’d been looking for. He was terminally ill and wanted one of his sons to take him down. Whoever did, he knew, would command the respect of the family. It was me, and Claudio hates me for it.”

“I’m sorry you had to go through all that,” Gigi said.

He shrugged. “A man must earn his respect, whatever the cost.” The corner of his lips twisted. “Be it from other men or from his troia. Come here, Ragazza. I desire you again. This time, though, I don’t want you to pass out.”

Chapter Thirteen

Ludovico stared at the paintings on the wall. The sound of the shower running filled the silence. He’d painted those pieces a long time ago, before he’d gotten rid of his father. Back when he’d wanted to be an artist. He scoffed. Dreams. He traced the blue lines with his gaze. Few people noticed it there beneath the other colors, permanent, never easing, always hiding. Yet, Gigi had seen it. He clenched his jaw. She was nothing more than a tool. A toy. Right? He ran his fingers through his hair. So why had he told her about his father? He’d never confessed that to any of the women he’d dated. None. Then again, none of them had inquired about the pieces. He laughed to himself. He even remembered that one time when one of them had declared they were the ugliest thing she’d seen. The sound of the phone’s ringtone brought him out of his thoughts. He scowled. It was Gigi’s phone and he recognized the number on the screen. He picked it up.

“Hello?”

“Ms. Evans?”

“Is not available at the moment. Who is this?”

“This is Police Officer Harris. And you are?”

“Her boyfriend.”

The words came out of him before he could think them through. He grimaced. Ludovico, what are you doing?

“Boyfriend? We have no record of her having a relationship.”

“We? Are you spying on her, Officer Harris?”

“Not at all, Mr…?”

Ludovico remained silent. The man on the other end of the line sighed dramatically.

“Please tell Ms. Evans to give me a call back at this number.”

“Regarding what?”

“That is confidential information.”

“I am her boyfriend.” Fuck, why did those words come out so easily? He’d gone from admiring her ass to declaring he was in a relationship with her. It was impulsive and that was the last thing he was.

“Still. I’d rather talk to her personally. Please, tell her we’ve called. Thank you.” Harris hung up the phone. Ludovico clenched his teeth. None of this seemed right. If the police were calling Gigi, it was because they knew something. What they mustn’t have realized yet was her link with him. He ran his fingers through his hair. He had to think of a way out of this.

Gigi came out of the shower with a towel wrapped around her body. His cock stirred at the memory of her smooth body on his, her soft mouth brushing every inch of his body.

“Who was it?” she asked, noticing her phone next to him.

“The police.”
