Taking her hands in mine harshly I hold her away from me. “You know I hate when you make demands. You aren’t in charge, Amber.”

“Don’t be a dick.”

“You smell like you rolled around in your father’s stash.” I glare at her. “My siblings are inside, and I won’t be exposing them to you.”

She rips her hands out of my grip, stumbling back and almost tripping. I watch her carefully, waiting for the inevitable temper tantrum.

“You know what?” she screeches. “Do whatever you want. You aren’t the only guy in town.”

She jumps into her black convertible and takes off down the drive, dust blowing up behind her. If I cared about her, I would be livid. She just threatened to sleep with another man, after all. But Amber is nothing more than a public service announcement.

Our families are united. We’re strong. I couldn’t give a shit if she fucks every man on earth. I just won’t be one of them.

It takes four buses and an Uber to get to the location Matthias sent me. I walk up the driveway debating this decision with every step, but it no longer matters. I have already quit my job and I spent a small fortune getting here. I will be going through with this.

I stare up at the large three-story brick monstrosity in front of me. My heart is thumping loudly in my chest and my breathing is harsh. I would give my left arm not to have to cross this threshold, but we all must do things we don’t want. Throwing back my shoulders I take a steadying breath and ring the bell.

Inside, I hear footsteps before a beautiful woman opens the door. She has curly red hair and bright-green eyes, dressed in light-blue jeans and a black tank top. Not quite what I was expecting to find in the home of one of the most feared cartel bosses in the continental US.

“Hello,” she says with a smile. “You must be Matty’s tutor. I’m Thalia, his mother.”

She extends her arm to allow me entrance. I smile and nod as I make my way inside. I turn to face her.

“I’m Kaelie.”

“It’s nice to meet you, dear. Matty is outside.” She stares at the bruising on my face but doesn’t say anything.

I smile at the nickname as she leads the way through the beautiful home until we reach a glass door that opens to the pool and magnificent garden beyond.

“Good luck,” Thalia says in a conspiring whisper before leaving me alone.

I have no idea what that was about, but I do know I need all the luck I can get when it comes to the man outside. Pushing the door open, I steal my resolve for what I’m sure is going to be one of the worst experiences of my life.

Matthias looks up from his phone and an instant frown appears on his handsome face. This is the other problem. I’m insanely attracted to the asshole in front of me. His olive skin, dark hair, and incredible physique make it hard to look past him. But that damn smirk he has, like he knows a secret no one else does, is what turns me to mush every time.

“You.” He glares, pushing the black chair back harshly.

I nod but don’t say a word. The anger rolling off him is palpable in the air. I knew this was a bad idea.

A harsh laugh falls from his lips. “The fucking irony. Of course, the one person available to tutor me is the little fucking mouse.”

The words land like physical blows and I can’t help but flinch.

“No amount of money is worth this bullshit,” I mumble, turning around.

I barely get the glass door opened an inch before his heat envelops me and his hand shuts it again. His breathing is hard in my ear, and I shiver at him being this close.

“You’re not running from me again.”
