“But–”

“Nathan, I said, not right now.” She turns to me, eyes softening when she sees the hurt on my face. “Just give me a minute.”

“Fine,” I say, even though I want to point out that she’s had seven years.

Annoyed, I go inside alone, grab a beer, and sit on the patio, thinking over everything that just happened.

When Evan texts me, I consider ignoring it, but he's maybe the only person who understands the situation, and I do need someone to talk to. Chett would just tease me about the fact that I had a crush on a dorky junior back in the day, and Travis would just congratulate me for landing Izzy, who he deems out of my league.

There is a reason Evan is still my best friend.

EVAN

Jules told me what happened.

I take a long sip of my drink before I respond.

ME

You and Jules sure talk a lot.

EVAN

We aren’t talking about me.

I think you both screwed up, You should've told Rory right from the beginning.

ME

What if she hates me?

EVAN

Neither of them hate you. Let me ask you this, do you love them? Both of them?

I feel the answer without hesitation. I do. I came to terms with that the moment I saw Izzy and the moment I found out about Rory.

ME

Of course.

EVAN

Are you ready to change? No more Courtney Warner?

I know how you were in New York. Are you ready to settle down permanently? In Dallas, if that’s what Izzy wants?

I mean her life is here. Her company.

ME

Whatever she wants.

I do miss New York, but that seems like a distant memory. It was only a month ago, but it might as well be a different lifetime. In a way it is. That life is gone. Single, tabloid darling, Nathan no longer exists.

EVAN

Good. Then I have a plan.
