“These things happen. It’ll die down. You should see the kinds of mistakes the other departments make.”

“I’m your secretary. I do see them,” she smiled. “I... to be honest, I don’t know what the right decision is to make now. Continue to stay on or get transferred. I did get a third option today, and I think I might want to take some time to consider it.”

“What’s the third option?” I asked.

“Starting a lingerie company with a friend of mine.” I listened to her, and then I nodded.

“Interesting,”

This made her smile.

“You think it’s a good idea?”

“Why would I think that?” I replied, and just then, our food arrived. We focused a little bit on eating, and then I lifted my gaze to hers once again.

“You have an interest in lingerie?” I asked.

“Not exactly, but my friend is in love with it. She quit her job as a lawyer to handle it, but she’s getting burnt out and broke because while she loves the creative side, she really hates the business side. I’ve learned so much from you over the past few months. Maybe I can take it on. Out of all my options, this makes me the most excited.”

“And... I’m telling you this not as your secretary or employee.”

This amazes me.

“Why are you telling me this then?” I asked.

“I’m pretending right now that I’m on a date with you,” she said. “Since I don’t know if I’ll ever get to actually be on one with you. So, I’m telling you this so that I can remember us together and have the date we never had in Thailand.”

“You’re saying goodbye?” I asked.

She looked at me and then she shook her head.

“Life is long. New York is really small. Maybe it’s not goodbye?”

I thought about her words there and then. I stopped and put my fork down. She looked at me.

“I’m going to tell you things now that I haven’t told anyone else, so listen and do with it what you want.”

“Alright,” she replied.

“I never wanted to stop our relationship when we returned to New York. I wanted to keep going with you because of the way I feel about you... the way I feel when I’m with you... I really haven’t ever felt that way with anyone else before.”

“So if you do choose to no longer be my secretary and to go into business with your friend, then I’m happy for you to explore that. And of course, I’ll be willing to lend my support however you might need it.”

“Okay,” she said. “I appreciate that.”

She returned to her meal, and I did the same. I was very well aware that I still hadn’t said exactly what I wanted to. I would leave this up to her.

Chapter Fifty

“So... are you guys dating or are you not dating?” Emma asked as she arrived in the apartment and collapsed on the couch.

“I have no fucking idea,” I replied.

“Did he kiss you goodnight?”

“No, we shook hands,” I replied, and her jaw dropped in shock.
