I open up the little postpartum gift basket my mom has made, thanking her for each little thing. But Evan continues to steal my attention. When he begins to mew, sounding more like a kitten than a human baby, I set all the gifts aside and reach for him. “I think he must be hungry. Finally.”

Hannah and my mom leave with promises to come see us again tomorrow. I feel exhausted even though I’ve just been sitting in the bed for hours, but I take my time getting Evan to latch and begin nursing. When he’s finally on me, sucking for all he’s worth, I rest my head back against the pillows behind me.

The quiet is soothing, a chance for us to soak up what’s happening. A lot has happened in the last twenty-four hours.

“He’s going to have such an amazing life. We’re going to make sure of it.” Jay comments as he finally sits down on the couch in the room. “I’ll work as hard as I can at the bar to make sure he has anything he could want.”

I reach out to touch Jay’s arm, feeling a surge of affection for the man who has been my steadfast partner through it all. “We are. And he’s so lucky to have you as his dad.”

Jay looks back at me, and even though I’ve never seen Jay cry, I can tell that emotion is building up behind his eyes now. “And he’s lucky to have you as his mom, Vi. You’re going to be incredible.”

When Evan is done eating, Jay offers to change his diaper, and I watch them interact until our baby is all cleaned up and in a fresh swaddling blanket.

As I watch Jay hold our son, I feel a deep sense of contentment. This is our beginning, the start of a new chapter for all three of us. Whatever happens now, at least we are facing it together.

I lean over to kiss Evan’s tiny forehead. “We love you so much.”

Evan wiggles a little in response, already settling back into sleep.

“You know, being a dad is easy,” Jay comments, setting Evan in his bassinet.

I laugh at that. “Oh, just wait till he wakes us up every two hours to eat. Then, you can remind me how easy it is.” But I reach for Jay, because even though I know being a mom won’t be easy, I’m ready to face it with Jay. I can face anything with him by my side.

The End.

I just slept with my boss.

My grumpy, blue-eyed DILF of a boss.

Twice.

Let me backpedal…

When Nathaniel Nichols hired me as his live-in nanny, I was all too thrilled to escape the trailer park and pack up to NYC.

I didn’t expect to meet a stone faced Adonis looming over me.

Seriously, a single dad in his late 30s shouldnotbe built like a linebacker.

As if nannying, homeschooling, andworking as his personal assistant don’t keep me busy enough, Nate makes an additional request of me.

Meet his stuffy grandmother and pretend to be his fiancée.

Simple. Until we’re snowed in,aloneat his winter cabin with nothing but body heat to keep us warm…

You can guess the rest.

Now I don’t know where we stand.

I’m struggling to protect my heart when Nate and his little boy are slowly melting the ice around it.

Things get even more complicated when I realizeI’m late.
