I took the ring and gently slid it into place on her finger. It fit perfectly. Then again, before we had allowed the ring that Mr. Wilson had attempted to give her to walk out of the lodge, I’d gone and figured out what size it was. I’d known even then that I might need to know Laurel’s ring size.

“It’s a beautiful ring.” She looked down at it with a large smile on her face.

“You deserve exactly what you said you wanted. They had to custom make the ring because they don’t often get people asking for so many emerald cut stones on a ring, but I think it turned out beautifully.”

“You did it right, Luke. I… I can’t tell you how much I appreciate that,” she said before pressing a kiss to my forehead.

I smiled widely at this before she stood up.

“Well, while all the guests are out and you’ve had the foresight to put together a bunch of sandwiches so that we could spend the afternoon together, would you like to take Stella to the pet store to pick up all the supplies for her?” I looked at her as I stood up.

“That would be amazing. Can we take Stella into the pet store?”

“It’s a pet store. I’m sure they wouldn’t mind,” I said, laughing.

Before we could head out the door, however, it opened. Standing in the doorway were Wyatt and Seth. They both smiled at me, and I nodded. They cheered.

“Congratulations you two!” Wyatt said, clapping me on the back before hugging Laurel. “Welcome to the family.”

“And who is this?” Seth asked, patting Stella on the head.

“This is Stella,” Laurel explained. “She’s the newest staff member here.” She let out a soft laugh. “Luke got me the most thoughtful present this year for my birthday.”

“Australian shepherd!” Seth noted appreciatively. “Just like when you were a kid, Luke.”

I nodded. My brothers and I had played with Australian shepherds as kids, and it was my favorite breed. Since Laurel didn’t have a favorite type of dog, I’d chosen one that I enjoyed.

“I’m so happy for you guys,” Seth said as he gave me a hug. “But as much as I would love to celebrate with you, I have some news too!”

We waited expectantly.

“I’ve decided to go to another fishing tournament.”

“This one’s in Michigan,” Wyatt cut in.

“I’m just waiting to get confirmation that the jet will be ready by tonight.”

“What kind of jet waits for you?” Laurel furrowed her brows. “Like a private jet?”

Seth nodded.

Laurel’s eyebrows shot up.

“You found a private jet to take you to fishing competitions?”

Wyatt chuckled. “I mean, it’s our family’s jet, so it’s not like he has to find a new pilot every time.”

Laurel’s jaw stayed open.

Seth looked at his watch. “And as much as I would love to keep talking, I really do have to jet, so to speak. I wish you both all the best in planning your wedding, and I’ll see you when I come back.”

“Have fun.” Wyatt smiled as he hugged Seth.

Laurel pursed her lips, but Wyatt went to the front desk where Rick was standing. She turned to me, confused, and I had to resist rolling my eyes. They’d all left me to do the explaining, which was fair. She deserved to know what she was marrying into, but I thought that it would be prudent for her to share the news of her engagement to me with the rest of her family first.

“Your cousins fly around on a private jet?” she asked, her eyes still wide.

“Why don’t we call our families and then you can ask me all the questions you have?” I looked at her. “It’s not just my cousins, but you deserve both answers and time to put together the questions you want to ask me. Does that sound fair?”
