I leaned slightly closer to him.

I could feel his smile when we kissed.

He pulled slightly away. “I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to… Was that okay?”

I smiled. “That was nice.”

I saw relief wash over his features and he lay back in the snow, grinning again. We both lay there, grinning stupidly at the sky for a moment before he turned back to me.

“We could always continue this inside,” Luke suggested. “I… I don’t think I’ve had this much fun since I started caring for the lodge. You’re a wonderful woman, Laurel.”

I smiled a little.

“I think that sounds wonderful. How about a movie?”

“I think a movie sounds great,” he said. “There’s a small movie room in the lodge. Shall we?”

“We shall, indeed,” I replied.

We walked back into the lodge, my arm intertwined in his. The walk was quiet, but I was more excited about the prospect of spending more time with Luke than I was about whatever movie we decided to watch. In fact, we could have watched a documentary about any topic, and I would have been happy, so long as Luke was there to watch it with me.

“So, what kind of movie do you want to watch?” We had reached the lobby by now, and Luke turned to me. “I’m not sure what all we have there but given that the cell towers haven’t been killed by the storm, the internet should be all right if you wanted to rent something online.”

“How about a romance movie?” I suggested.

Luke tilted his head before raising an eyebrow. I felt my cheeks flush. Perhaps that hadn’t been the best suggestion, given what kind of life Luke had led.

“Hmm…” He pursed his lips. Then, he placed a hand on my cheek before continuing, “I think we could make our own romance movie.”

Before I could ask him what that meant, he had pressed his lips to mine again. I melted into the kiss. I put my arms around his neck slowly, letting him set the pace.

“Excuse me?”

A third voice interrupted the kiss. I had half-expected to be swept off my feet and carried into the movie room. However, what confused me was the fact that this was not Rick’s voice that had caught us off-guard.

But it sounded familiar.

Luke cleared his throat, a deep blush appearing on his cheeks before he turned to face the person who had come to the lodge.

Chapter twenty

Luke

I cleared my throat to try and clear any thoughts of what was going on out of the head of the person who had just walked in. It wasn’t Rick, nor was it Wyatt or Seth. I would have gotten a text if they were that close, and my phone hadn’t gone off at all today. I also knew we didn’t have any reservations for a few days, and I certainly hadn’t expected any walk-ins to show up given the snow.

The man looked about Laurel’s age – maybe a couple of years older than her – standing in front of us. He had dark brown hair and green eyes. He looked conventionally attractive, and the watch on his wrist indicated expensive taste.

“May I help you, sir?”

“I’m looking for the owner of the place,” he said before looking over at Laurel.

I glanced at Laurel, only to find that all of the color had drained from her face – if that were possible. I didn’t have a chance to ask what was going on, because I now had to remain professional. Maybe Laurel was just embarrassed that a guest had walked in on us kissing.

“Right this way, sir. I can help you with anything you might need,” I said. “May I have a name?”

“Mark Wilson,” the young man said. “I need a room for a few days. My…” he hesitated and looked at Laurel, “My car has decided to act up.”

I smelled a rat, but I decided not to say anything at first.
