I don’t bother pushing further. They won’t say a word, anyway.

I head back upstairs, cautiously peeking over my shoulder at their goofy smiles as I go.

When I reach the bedroom, I pause. There’s a dress laid out on the bed. New and scarlet red, the same color as their ties. Not something I’d usually wear, and in fact haven’t worn anything like it since the night the three of us first hooked up.

Jackie must have helped with this, too.

I remind myself to give her another raise come spring.

Two little boxes stand out on the bed beside the dress, both tied off with a scarlet ribbon.

My heart flutters.

I love my boys so very much.

Chapter Twenty-Eight

Max

I pour myself a cup of coffee as I scroll the screen on my phone.

“No,” Thad says, suddenly behind me.

I flinch. “What?”

“No work. No emails. Remember? This is Phoebe time.”

“Just once, I swear,” I say. “Making sure my auto-responder is on.”

He reaches for his own mug. “Good.”

Of the three of us, he’ll need more caffeine today than anybody. But I trust the man with my life. Always. I’m not worried.

“Are we making good time?” I ask.

“Oh, yeah. I told them eleven-thirty at the latest.”

I exhale before taking a sip of coffee. “Good.”

As I lower my mug, I notice Thad’s hand between us, holding a folded sheet of paper torn out of his notepad. The one he writes in. The one he never lets anybody read, except sometimes Phoebe.

“What’s that?” I ask.

“It’s for you.”

“For me?”

“Yeah. I, uh…” His lips twitch. “I found some words.”

I gently unfold the paper. It’s his handwriting, light scratches in red ink. “Roses are red, my eyes are blue,” I read aloud. “Now you know how it feels… to have me inside of you?”

Thad chuckles, his cheeks red. “It’s a work-in-progress, admittedly.”

I laugh. “Thank you, Thad. That’s very sweet.”

“I’ll keep working on it,” he says, his voice softer than usual. “Until I find the right words.”

He goes quiet, but he doesn’t have to say it. Or write it.
