“I had a bite at the airport,” I say. “But I could eat.”

Thad smiles. “Go get cleaned up. We’ll have something ready by the time you get out.”

I start toward the stairs. “With this kind of service, a girl might never leave home again.”

Chapter Twenty-Five

Phoebe

I relish beneath the hot shower water, banishing every trace of shampoo and soap before turning it off. My surprise early homecoming didn’t exactly go as planned, but I wouldn’t say it went badly either.

I spent my twenty-minute shower gathering my thoughts about it, not that I had many.

Max and Thad. Thad and Max.

My boys in love.

Somehow, deep down, I think I’ve always known. I just couldn’t see it until… well, I saw it with my own eyes.

I step out of the shower and pat myself dry before throwing on my robe.

Darkness greets me as I open the door. My eyes adjust to a dozen candles scattered around the bedroom.

“Phoebe.”

I jolt, nearly dropping my towel at the voice in the dark. “Thad?”

“Close the bathroom door.”

I squint at the armchair, barely making out his shape. “What?”

“Close the bathroom door.”

His voice twists into a low growl that trembles my knees.

I close the bathroom door. “So, what’s for dinner?” I ask.

He doesn’t answer. He just stares at me in the dark.

“Thad?” I ask.

“Drop the robe,” he says.

“But I’m naked.” I cringe. “Though, I guess that’s kind of the point.”

Thad says nothing, but I sense his smile.

“Where’s Max?” I ask.

“Drop the robe, Phoebe.”

“Ah!” I spin around, the room too dark to notice Max hovering in the corner behind me. “What the fuck, guys?!”

“Max,” Thad says.

“What is—“

“Shh,” Max whispers, suddenly beside me. He touches my chest and slides his hands beneath my robe, pushing it back over my shoulders. “Do as he says.”
