She faces me with eyes full of panic and shame. “When I first saw your dad, I thought he was attractive.”

I blink, her words so quick they almost blend. “What?”

“I’m sorry!” She covers her face with her fists. “He just walked in here all tall and handsome, and I don’t know, so… mysterious and distinguished and I thought, oh! He’s handsome!” She cringes. “I didn’t know he was your dad!”

I laugh.

“What?” she asks. “Why are you laughing? I’m horrible!”

“You’re not horrible, Phoebe.”

“I am! I’m a horrible, rotten, Hemsley slut. Apparently.”

“No, you’re not.” I pull her into my arms. “Well, maybe a little.”

“I’m sorry!” she says, her face smothered in my chest.

“Don’t be sorry.” I kiss her head. “You have nothing to be sorry for. My dad is… well, it’s where I got it from.”

She looks up, her eyes scanning my face. “I guess it’s nice to know you’ll still have that jawline in twenty years.”

I grin. “I love you, Phoebe. So much.”

“I love you, Thad,” she says. “So much.”

I kiss her, deeply, as if it were our last kiss, our first kiss. But there’s going to be more. So many more.

With a smile, she turns and restarts the elevator, taking us the rest of the way to our suite.

“Where did you two go?”

Max stands at the doors as they open, now dressed and on his way to find us.

I hold up the bottle of bourbon. “Needed more booze!” I say, walking in with Phoebe. “Now, what are you doing with clothes on? Both of you get back in bed. I’m ordering up some food.”

“Oh, yes! Food!” Phoebe says, her dress already on the floor. “I’m starving.”

I head toward the phone. Max follows a step behind.

“Where did you really go?” he asks.

I wonder how much I should say, but this is Max Monahan. My best and oldest friend. “Getting some closure,” is all I need to say.

He nods, understanding.

“Oh, my god! Seriously, you guys, we have got to get one of these beds!”

We laugh. Our adorable Phoebe.

Chapter Thirty-Four

Phoebe

Back to Phoebe’s 30th Birthday

“That was a good weekend,” I say. “I mean, sure, it started out a little rocky, but there were still some wonderful moments.”

Thad smiles. “You’re right,” he says, his hand playfully caressing mine. “It wasn’t all bad.”
