She spins around and races upstairs.

Jake steps toward me and kisses my cheek. “And that’s parenting.”

“That’s negotiating with terrorists,” I joke.

“Same thing.” He kisses me again. “I’m gonna go tuck her in.”

“Have fun.”

He heads up the stairs and I tilt my head to get a good look at his rear as he goes.

Evey squeals in the bathroom.

“Evey?” I ask as I move down the hall. “Are you okay?”

The door swings open as I reach it. Evey holds up her hand, revealing the white, plastic stick in her fingers. “Pregnancy test!” she says.

I nod at it. “Looks like one.”

“Why are you taking a pregnancy test?” she asks.

“To… test for pregnancy?”

Her jaw drops. “Are you pregnant?!”

I pinch her wrist and turn her hand to show the result. “No,” I read.

Evey looks at it. “Oh.” She turns around and tosses it back in the trash. “Sorry, I got excited there for a second.”

“How did you even manage to bend over far enough to sift through the trash?” I ask, slightly impressed.

“It wasn’t easy,” she says. Her brows bounce. “Are you guys trying?”

“Shh.”I hold a finger to my lips. “We’re not public with that information.”

“You are?!”

“A little,” I whisper.

“Aww.” She flicks the light off. “Now I understand why you’re rushing the wedding.”

I roll my eyes and walk toward the kitchen. “We’re not rushing the wedding. We’re just ready to be married. No sense in waiting years. We’d rather get it out of the way.”

She waves a hand. “Totally get it. Vin and I did the courtroom thing and it was awesome. You were there.”

“Yes, I was.”

We sit down at the table and Evey flinches at the photos.

“Well, you’re certainly going all out this year,” she says.

I gather it all up and set it to the side. “Did you bring the magazines?” I ask, gesturing to her tote bag.

“Yes, ma’am.” She lifts the bag and turns it out onto the table. “All the bridal magazines I couldn’t bear to part with.”

“Thank you…” I say, scanning the bright, white dresses sprawled out in front of me. “I really thought finding a dress would be the easy part.”

Evey snorts. “Oh, no, honey.”
