Anna

Jake clenches his chest. “Anna—?”

I hop up off the couch. A little bit of that sticky, fake blood rolls over my collarbone but it was worth it. “Happy Halloween!” I say, bouncing.

He gasps for breath. His fingers dig into his tight, black shirt as he tries to form words.

My smile drops. “Jake, are you—”

He falls to his knees. “Ann—” He heaves and coughs. “Help—”

I step forward as he tumbles the rest of the way down to the floor. He lands with a loud, dull thud on his back.

Oh, god.

Oh, my god.

I actually gave him a heart attack.

“Jake!” I drop to the floor beside him and push my fingers against his neck to feel for a pulse. “Jake!”

He doesn’t move.

My training kicks in. I feel beneath his nose for airflow but he’s not breathing. Oh, god. He’s not breathing.

What have I done?

“Jake!” I scream.

I tilt his chin back and open his mouth. I take a deep breath, filling my lungs before pinching his nose shut. I lean over to lock lips with him and blow hard into his—

He shoves his tongue into my mouth.

“Aghch—” I say, nearly choking. I try to pull away but his strong hand grips the back of my head, forcing me to stay put as he gives me a hard, painful kiss. “Jake! What—”

He releases me and laughs as he lays his hands behind his head. “Boo,” he says.

I pound on his chest with two closed fists. “You scared the hell out of me!”

“You?!”He catches my wrists and gestures to my neck. “I scared you?!”

I push off the floor. “Okay, fine. We’re even.”

“Oh, no. No, no. This isn’t even. This is far from even. I thought you hated Halloween.”

“Well, I… lied.” I stutter.

“You lied?”

I exhale, feeling panic. “I lied to trick you. I frickin’ love Halloween and I knew that you loved it, too, so I wanted to make our first one together special and fun, so I…”

I draw a line along my bloody throat.

He smirks. “You love Halloween?”

“Yeah,” I squeak.
