“Why?” I give her a crooked smile to tease her. “Are you jealous?”

“Hell no!” She turns off the lamp, turns on the night light, and leaves the door half-open. “But Ryan might be.”

“I’m not into her, Amanda,” I insist as I follow her back downstairs. “I never was.”

“I know,” she responds with confidence. “But things are different now. She was so good with Senna…”

“What’s your point?”

We’re descending the stairs, and I’m feeling increasingly indignant at her insinuations. At the bottom step, Amanda looks at me and smiles, a hand on her hip for added sass.

“You need a good woman, Ethan. You and I both know she’s just that. Did you even…”

“What?” I raise an eyebrow, knowing I won’t like what I’m about to hear.

“Did you have sex with anyone after we separated?”

Her question pierces me like an icy blade, and my pained expression makes her laugh, giving her the answer without me uttering a single word.

“Did you?” I manage to ask, gathering my composure.

“It doesn’t feel appropriate to talk about it with you yet,” Amanda shrugs with a teasing smile.

I soften my expression. “You know you have no reason to keep secrets from me.”

Amanda’s shoulders slump, and she shakes her head. “It’s not that, it’s just that it was meaningless,” she shrugs. “He didn’t even know about Senna, didn’t even bother to ask. I just needed to break the dry spell. You should do it too.”

Now I’m the one whose shoulders slump, and I turn toward the foyer.

“Haven’t found the right one yet,” I mutter, scratching the back of my head, ready to leave.

“You’re such a noble soul.” She lightly taps me on the chest. “A true gentleman.”

“Eh, you know that I’m not.” Amanda is a pro at embarrassing me. “I just don’t see the point in having sex with someone I don’t care about.”

She puts her thumbs in her belt hoops and looks at me from head to toe.

“You looked different around Mia,” she finally says thoughtfully. “Don’t you like her?”

“Not romantically!” I instantly get defensive. “She’s my brother’s ex. What sort of asshole would I be?”

“No more of an asshole than Ryan was,” she shrugs. “I mean, eight years of waiting for a proposal that never came. No wonder she grew tired of him.”

Awkwardly, I scratch the back of my head again.

“I better get going, Amanda,” I say, biting my lip. “We’re leaving tomorrow for the next game.”

“Let me get the door for you.”

And with that, we bid our goodbyes. I’ll be seeing them again over the weekend for the next game in St. Louis, and I’ll miss Senna every second until then.

Amanda, however, has put an idea in my head.

Mia and me?

As much as I try to push it away, it stubbornly sticks around.
