He wraps his arms around me, pulling me closer, and gently kisses the top of my head. His fingers trail lightly down my arm, sending tingles through my body. We lie there, savoring the intimacy, the world outside fading away.

When he pulls away from me, I hear his breath catch.

“Oh, shit!” Ethan exclaims.

“What’s wrong?” I glance back.

“The condom broke,” Ethan frowns, concern flickering across his face.

I sit up, my heart racing, but I try to stay calm. “I’m on birth control,” I reassure him, despite the whirlwind of emotions.

I glance at my phone, realizing it’s already four in the morning. “I should get some rest before work.”

Despite Ethan’s protests, I quietly dress. Before leaving, he pulls me close and kisses me gently. “I wish you’d stay,” he murmurs, reluctance evident in his voice.

The words send a shiver through me, and I’m tempted to stay and wake up in his arms. However, I also want to avoid anyone witnessing me leaving his room.

“I want to,” I admit softly, brushing a hand through his hair. “But it’s better this way, before anyone sees us.”

Back in my room, I collapse onto the bed. The lingering heat of Ethan’s touch contrasts sharply with the cool sheets beneath me. Despite my exhaustion, I can’t help but replay our intense moments together in my mind, a wave of exhilaration washing over me.

One thing is certain. I am glad I took Ethan up on his suggestion to be more open and not worry about taking things too seriously.

Yeah, that was definitely better than my dream.

I wake up to the sound of the alarm, exhausted but unable to wipe the smile off my face.

Chapter Ten

ETHAN

Idrift in and out of sleep, still basking in the afterglow.

No worries weigh on my mind, just the lingering bliss.

As I wake up, Amanda’s call breaks the morning silence, and I answer, groggy but content.

“Hey, Ethan,” her tone is calm. “Senna has Career Day soon.”

I jump into a seated position, rubbing my forehead and looking around for my clothes. They are everywhere.

“I did it for his class last year. As long as I’m in Detroit with no conflicts, I’ll do it.”

“You better!” she gently scolds me, “My brother Dan offered to go, but the school obviously prefers a star NHL player to a lawyer.”

I chuckle, “How are you doing?”

“Fine,” she says. “Popped a tire yesterday. Patched it up myself and wasn’t even late picking up Senna from practice!”

“Nice!” I cheer.

“And how about you? You are sounding awfully peppy this morning.”

Here we go.

I’m not the lying type, and with Amanda, it wasn’t as much as I didn’t want to lie, it was the fact that I couldn’t.

“Mia and I had sex,” I admit, with absolutely no regrets.
