First thing’s first, though, I meet with my brother in my office and tell him what happened, and my story ends with my brother, the ever serious one, laughing.

“You’re saying that girl and her brother, a tiny man who’s barely five feet tall, kidnapped you?” Roark’s still chuckling, even as he speaks. “If the word gets out that you were had by a pair like that, you’ll lose more than just respect.”

“Yes, well, it backfired in their faces.”

Roark leans back in the leather chair he’s sitting in across from me, his hands folded over his stomach. He wears a suit much like me; if there was one thing our father taught us before he passed, it’s that a man is only as good as his clothes. “What’s up with the girl? She’s pretty, young—but why bother keeping her alive?”

“I told you, she’s mine.”

“Okay, so fuck her, kill her, and dump her. It’s what she deserves for kidnapping you.”

Fucking her is definitely on the table, but killing her and dumping her? Hell no. There isn’t a single scenario I would ever let that happen. My brother might not see it now, but he will: there’s so much more to Thea than he could possibly realize. I want to peel back her layers, get under her skin, and find myself a permanent residence there.

When I don’t say anything right away, my brother chuckles again—a record for him. “Shit. I know that look. She intrigues you. She’s here to stay, then, at least for a while, till you get bored.” He’s so confident that I’ll grow tired of her and put a bullet in her. “Are you going to share her, at least?”

A muscle in my jaw tenses. “No. She’s mine.”

Roark shrugs, no skin off his back. “Oh, well. Had to ask. She has that wide-eyed innocence that gets me going.” My brother has a thing about sharing, something I do not share with him, pun not intended. He gets up. “I suppose I’ll leave you to it, then. Good luck. Fuck her hard for me.” He touches his forehead in a mock-salute before leaving my office.

I sit back in my high-backed leather chair and watch him go. We’re as close as brothers could be, the only family either one of us has left. Our mother died when we were children, and our father passed a few years back—lung cancer. Too much smoking. It’s why Roark and I gave it up, so we don’t follow his footsteps to an early, avoidable grave.

With how many people in this city who’d love to kill us themselves, having a cigarette do it just doesn’t have the same finality, nor the same poetic final curtain.

That said, though Roark and I are close, we don’t live together. I’ve got a condo in the center of downtown, while he has a house that’s more like a mansion on the outskirts of the city. We each have our own men, our own businesses, our own friends who help us out with information while we help them with money, but any chance we can work together, we do.

I will not, however, be sharing Thea with him.

It isn’t to say we haven’t done so before. He’s more than happy to share anything of his, and in the past I’ve indulged his tastes by sharing women trying to insert themselves into my life with him, if they were into it.

Thea is different. I don’t want to share her. I want that girl all to myself… but I suppose I can fuck her hard, for my brother’s sake.

I stand and leave my office. I don’t go to her right away; I instead shower and put on a fresh change of clothes. I shave, taking my time in making sure there’s not a hair out of place. It’s only when I’m ready that I tell the men stationed outside the door to her room to leave.

“I’ll take it from here,” I tell them. “Go home.”

The pair of men—Zackary and Anthony—give me a short bow of their heads before leaving. They’ve been with me for years; I trust them as much as I trust anyone under my command. Their loyalty’s never been questioned.

I enter the room and find Thea sitting in the corner in a tight ball, her arms around her knees. The moment I walk in, her head snaps up and her blue eyes widen when they spot me. She’s slow to stand as I shut the door behind me.

“Hello, Thea,” I say with a smile. “Sorry about the… lack of accommodations. I was thinking this could be your room—” I pause as I survey the windowless room. It’s the only room that isn’t furnished, mostly because I’ve never known what to do with it.

But now… let’s just say a part of me wonders if I somehow knew this day would come, like I knew future me would need it.

“I’ll order you furniture. A bed, a dresser, some clothes,” I go on, my hands in my pant pockets as I step closer to where she stands in the corner. “I’ll get you whatever you want, but you should know you won’t be leaving this condo for a long time. Hell, you’ll only leave this room under my supervision… and that includes bathroom breaks.”

Thea swallows hard. “My brother—what are you going to do to him?”

“Once my men catch him, I’ll have him taken somewhere special. Not here, of course. Wouldn’t want you two trying to scheme an escape.”

“Are you… are you going to hurt him?” For someone so feisty, the gravity of the situation she’s in must weigh on her. Thea has difficulty speaking a full sentence without pausing and looking like she’s going to throw up.

I move to stand directly before her, towering over her quite easily. I’m just over a foot taller than her, so it’s an effortless endeavor. “That depends on you, love. If you give me what I want—” I trail the backs of my fingers down along her heart-shaped face. “—I might be more lenient on your brother.”

“And you want sex?” The words are out of her quickly, though she doesn’t pull away from my hand—a good sign.

I chuckle. “Thea, I want it all. Your time, your body… your soul.” The hand I trailed along her jaw falls to her neck, where my fingers curl. It’s all too easy for that slender neck of hers to be swallowed by my hand.

She lets out a soft gasp when I squeeze her neck. Not hard enough to choke, but enough to make her eyelids flutter. She did the same thing at the club, when I pulled her onto my lap and said we better make it believable. I wonder what other sounds she makes…
