"We’re all excited for you," Kassie told me gently. "You’ve got this."

She’s telling me he’s not coming.

What was I expecting? Of course Adam wasn’t coming. Training for this presentation meant that I’d counted on him being my focus point. Without him…I’d be…fine. I had to accept it. I had to ace this presentation.

I needed to say goodbye to the athletics dorms.

Adam

Coming To Collect

Thirty minutes left.

Fuck.

I was surrounded by a team of lawyers in Cleo’s war room. Everyone was throwing around phrases like defamation cases and restraining orders while I stared at my phone.

My thumbs hovered over the keyboard. It was an addiction. I needed to know how Piper’s presentation was going, even if I couldn’t go.

I opened my messages and sent one off to Zariah.

adam: zariah

Nothing. That made sense, she was busy getting the event ready. My foot jiggled against the ground while two of Cleo’s drones made calls to some of my old teachers to start creating a paper trail. I debated on calling Zariah when the reply popped up.

big z: ?

"Thank fuck," I muttered.

adam: how many people are at the presentation

I knew how much this meant to my ice princess.

big z: counting the judges? 13

big z: it’s RA stuff not a big shocker no ones here

big z: if there’s lots of people there’s free tshirts

Goddammit. I squeezed my eyes shut and hung my phone down. I could almost taste Piper’s disappointment. The RA conference had been bad enough but Piper had been looking forward to a real shot at Roman Hall. This was it.

And now she’d be doing it in front of a handful of schmucks.

Fuck.

"I have a fifth-grade teacher over here," one of the assistants called out, jotting something down on a piece of paper. "She reported a sprained wrist and his parents forced a change of instructor."

A weird feeling crept over me and I leaned up, glancing off towards the door frame. King stood there in a button-up and slacks, confused. He motioned to the scene.

"Hey, man," I called to him.

The mass of suits ignored him and continued trading papers and evidence while King made slow moves into the room, confused.

"What is this?" he finally asked, walking close.

I didn’t answer his question. "Are you heading to Piper’s thing?"
