“Z, not now.” Adam said. “We’re in the middle of a conversation.”

I shook my head. “The conversation’s over.”

“How long do we have to stay at the hockey game?” Ryan’s voice carried down the hall. “Ten minutes?”

Kassie was on his arm, King following close behind, all of us separated off from the rest of the football players streaming out from today’s practice. The practice where I kissed Adam and almost tore off his clothes. Going after another emotionally unavailable football player, how embarrassing.

“I could stand for some gambling,” Kassie mused. “How long until Elijah punches someone in the face? I can make some good money off this game.”

“We can’t go tonight,” Adam interjected.

We?

“Who’s we?” Kassie took a long look around us and settled on me, confused.

“Of course you’re going.” Zariah snorted, passing out the tickets. “They’re getting new hockey transfers next year. Did I tell you? Apparently, they’re bringing in someone new to captain—”

“Piper and I can’t go.”

What?

I blinked. “What are you talking about?”

“You have the programming project—the development one—due tomorrow and I have a Spanish test to study for.”

For a long moment, I stared at Adam, genuinely confused. He’d been studying for the Spanish test all week and I finished my project during my first class. Midterms were coming up, but all the nitpicky, tiny assignments were finished. We could have a night off.

King raised his eyebrows. “Adam, I didn’t know you did that.”

“Wow.” Kassie shook her head in amazement. “Adam, studying. The world’s coming to an end. It was nice while it lasted.”

“But you’ve been studying all week?” I pointed out.

Even if Adam didn’t want to stay around for the hockey game, I had to. After today, after the kiss, I didn’t want to face the ramifications of it. If I could get past this, I’d be fine. Eventually, I’d get over it.

Adam shifted uncomfortably. “I don’t know if…if I studied enough for it.”

“Okay?” I shrugged. “But I want to go to the game.”

King took his place next to me and held out his phone. “Are you still down to help me with my dating profile?”

Kassie slung an arm over my shoulder. “Yeah, Piper’s got important work to do with us.”

“Blonde and tall?” Zariah whistled. “Oh, Piper, the boys will be jumping over the glass to get to you.”

Adam stared at me for a long moment, silent.

“You’re coming too, right?” I prompted him. As much fun as hanging out with everybody sounded, I didn’t want to leave Adam behind. “Are you really not coming?”

He took a deep breath. “I changed my mind. I’m going.”

Three days later, I wasn’t much better.
