“Yes. I had my doubts by the end of our first night here. It shouldn't have taken them so long.”

His body was tense against my back.

“I truly don't believe they would have abandoned us,” he said. “I'm afraid that something must have happened to them.”

“To all of them?” I asked. “It's possible that your friends were stopped, and the others did not know where we went.”

“Maybe,” he said dubiously. “But I fear the worst. They were near the jungle's edge. What if they were eaten by an animal or fell off a waterfall or?—”

“There's no way of knowing,” I interrupted, but now my heart was pounding.

What if they had all been killed because of that foolish plan? What would that mean for Addy? He would be the last remaining survivor of those who should be punished... and the other innocent omegas hadn't deserved this anymore than I had. At least I had been taken by someone who loved and cared for me. I didn't think that was the case for the other three...

“Naz was always so calm and kind,” I whispered. “I was looking forward to learning from him upon becoming a priest. It would be a tragedy if something happened to him.”

Addy squeezed me and I could practically feel his guilt as though it were my own.

“Did you know the others?” he asked.

“Not well,” I answered. “I did self-defense training with Ekti sometimes, but usually partnered with Latif. And I heard that Samar’s parents were overprotective. I don't believe he was in as many activities growing up. They were both very nice as far as I knew.”

“Goddess, can you please stop talking about them in past tense?” he pleaded. “My heart is breaking.”

I rolled around to face him even though it was too dark to see his face.

“We will get answers at some point,” I said gently. “Let’s not speculate now. They may be completely fine.”

“But how do you know?” he demanded.

“I don't,” I returned. “But I can hope for the best. Lately, all of my hopes and dreams have been granted to me. I've been given alone time with you, a comfortable place for us to hide away from the world together, your willing bond and body, more sex than I everthought I was going to have and above all of that, your love. Why would the universe stop there? It is giving me gifts and I am gratefully receiving them.”

He chuckled.

“You know, all of those things are just me, right? The outside world may not be so receptive.”

“Then let's stay here,” I pleaded. “For as long as we possibly can, let it be me and you and this lovely home, removed from anyone who would judge us or say we shouldn't be together like this.”

Addy pressed a quick kiss to my lips and then drew back.

“As much as I love hearing you say these things, I had wanted to preserve our culture. The mockery of our traditions, the omega auction in particular, is something that bothered me?—”

“I hope you're not saying that I should have had an auction, Addy,” I interrupted.

He was silent for a long minute.

“You should have, Alil. I should have proven myself to you by fighting the other alphas for you.”

I sat up, my heart pounding in fear even though we had already avoided that scenario.

“I wouldn't have done it, don't you see?” I demanded. “There was nothing that could make me go to auction, Addy. I wasn't willing to have anyone else.”

“You said that before and I was too happy to hear how much you wanted me to think of anything else, but you forget that I may have won,” he said, voice heavy in the dark. “I wouldhave if you truly believe that we are meant to be together.”

I could hear the anguish in his voice and knew that I had messed up.

“Addy—”

“No,” he said, cutting me off. “You have made it quite clear. You do not believe we are fated to be together.”
