As we climbed the last bit, there Finch was hovering over Amaris. Judging by the visible marks, she had tried to claw her face off.

“I knew you’d be lovely once you embraced your true side.” Manchineel’s voice was raised, and it was like ice water had been poured on Finch.

He lifted his head so fast, Amaris’s screams ceased. He looked from his father to me and Tru, to Arachnis.

“Let them go.”

Manchineel huffed. “I think not. Your human has caused me undue stress. His death is the only way to free Arachnis.”

“Not true.” Finch glanced at Amaris, who was sobbing, but whatever he had done to her subsided. “The court is seeking proof that he’s a dreamer. Him and his son.”

“Hmm.” Arachnis turned to face me. “But the girl is nothing. It’s why our sister took her.” He crooked a finger. “Bring her to me.”

I spun her away as a fae tried to pry her from me.

“Over my dead body.”

“Oh, I can make your dreams come true.” Arachnis grinned.

“Nobody touches them.” Finch moved closer to us, his hair still black, his image haunting.

He’d been afraid he’d lose himself if he succumbed to the darkness hibernating inside him but from where I stood, he was all there. He was fully aware of every aspect and very much not outside of his mind.

Arachnis tilted his head at Finch. “Are you willing to fight and die for your little pets, Brother?”

“Call them pets one more time, and I’ll make you wish for a quick death.”

Arachnis scoffed. “You’re pathetic, Finch. I take it you are in fact willing to fight?”

“If I must.”

“Finch, no,” I gasped, but he wouldn’t look away from Arachnis.

The deep chuckle from the evil fae shot dread into the pit of my stomach.

Arachnis rubbed his hands together. “Let the games begin.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-EIGHT

Finch

Seeing Easton and Tru so close to my father and brother enraged me even more. My plan had been to hold Amaris down long enough for Easton and Tru to get away and hopefully join them at the base of the mountain.

I should’ve known my father would use this opportunity as a trap. How he’d gotten Arachnis out wasn’t something I had time to think about since said brother was currently trying to challenge me.

Arachnis had powers, and they were strong. But he had limitations. Fire and spiders were his thing and while dangerous, all I needed to do was incapacitate him, and he wouldn’t be able to concentrate.

He had to know that was what I did. Amaris hadn’t a clue because she was out of her flipping mind, but Father had the knowledge and Arachnis was his closest child. He had to have shared that information with him. Why would he challenge me?

Arachnis opened his hands for dramatic effect, because our magic wasn’t much with hand movements and fanfare. You could conjure it with your mind. Only to connect to nature and magic was touch helpful, like how I’d been able to find where Amaris held Tru.

The chattering of his eight-legged beasts were loud, but they’d never make it to the clearing.

With a smirk, I pushed the thought that Arachnis was being impaled with a hundred shards of glass.

His brow flickered; he had a high pain tolerance…More it is, then. When he gasped, I created thoughts that fire, his very own magic, was burning him from within.

He fell to his knees, the spiders long forgotten as he grasped his head and screamed.
