It was fast and coming right toward Easton. I yanked him to the ground and grabbed, from midair, the object coming for him.

“You dare try to harm a dreamer,” I shouted and crumbled the arrow that was likely poison dipped.

Laughter echoed loudly all around us, halting Tru from her yanking. Easton was still on the ground. I was insanely strong, something he likely hadn’t realized until now.

“Amaris,” I growled. “Show yourself.”

From behind the Montezuma cypress trees, she crept out. In her hand was a rapier. She was close to Tru, too close.

Easton got to his feet but I held on to his arm, knowing he’d try and charge her the second she threatened Tru.

“So nice of you to visit, Brother.”

“Let my daughter go,” Easton shouted. His voice was filled with every horrible thing his imagination wanted to do to Amaris.

She tsked and tapped the tip of the rapier to her blackened teeth.

“I’d rather not.”

Easton went to move, but I yanked him back.

“Amaris, release her. You’re breaking laws you’ll never recover from. If you release her immediately, I’ll speak on your behalf.”

She cackled and moved closer to Tru, who was now crying.

“Fae don’t care what happens to humans. At least ones that aren’t special.” She pointed the rapier at Tru. “She’s not special.”

“I won’t ask you again, Amaris.” I took a step forward, making sure Easton remained behind me.

“I’ll gut her before you have a chance to touch me,” she snarled.

“You’re not fast enough.” I stared her down. She wasn’t sure what magic the darkness had with me. She wondered—they all did—but none had ever seen.

I knew I’d be lost to it, and it was one of the main reasons I’d told Easton to run when I gave Tru to him. I wasn’t going to rest until this ended for good and if I was in a haze, I didn’t want to hurt them.

“You did this to my brother, Finch. You went against your own kind, and for what?”

“The time for talking is done, Amaris. Release her.”

“I won’t.” She inched even closer to Tru.

I shot a look at Easton.

“Remember what I said?”

His green eyes met mine. Sadness, fear, and love all swam in his gaze, and I wished more than anything that we were in bed, the world wasn’t like this, and we had no worries. But that wasn’t real.

“Run.”

I gave him a curt nod.

“I love you, Easton.”

He opened his mouth, and Tru screamed.
