“Talk to Tru, see what her dreams are like, and rein in your temper. Like Finch said, it takes a lot to fight the magic, and mine very much wanted to kick your ass a second ago.”

I really liked her. “Copy that.”

CHAPTER THIRTY-FOUR

Finch

I stayed at Easton’s house for three days before Tru cornered me in the kitchen.

“Dad’s doing a lot better,” she mentioned as she popped a chip into her mouth. Thankfully his furlough was extended when he got hurt from the fire.

We were watching a movie and paused it to get refreshments. Milo’s appointments had been going well. His counts weren’t great but with no signs of danger, he wanted to celebrate. We had a make-your-own-pizza night and I’d baked my famous cookies. Now, we were all being subjected to a movie of Milo’s choosing.

When I offered to get more popcorn, Tru immediately jumped up to help…and now I saw why.

“Agreed.” I grabbed a large bowl from the cabinet to fill.

“And you’re still here.” Ouch.

“Does that bother you?” I hated asking that for fear of the answer.

“Not as much as I’d have thought it would.” She stepped closer, eyes narrowed. “Milo’s smart, but I question how observant he is.”

If she only knew about his dreams. “What do you mean?”

“Well, I happen to know you’ve been sleeping in my dad’s room.”

I fumbled with the popcorn bag, and a spray of them collapsed on the counter. One glance at her proved she was trying to hold off a laugh.

“I see…and?”

She lifted one shoulder and began collecting the lost corn. “I’m just saying, I’m cool with you and my dad. I never really thought of him with anyone other than my mom, but for some reason you make sense…which is so weird.”

“Why is it weird?”

“You’re a guy…he’s a guy…” She tilted her head back and forth as if that explained it.

“Hold on.” I faced her with my whole body. “Are you against your father being with another man?”

Her eyes widened. “Oh my God, no!” Her cocky demeanor suddenly evaporated. “That’s not at all what I was saying, Finch.”

At that moment, she appeared much older than her thirteen years.

“Have you talked to your dad about any of this?”

She shook her head. “He told Milo and me that you two were going on a date, so we knew you were doing that. I was going to talk to him some more, but then he started asking me about my dreams.”

Uh-oh… “What about your dreams?”

She chuckled. “You’re trying to change the conversation. My teacher does this when I ask too many questions in class.”

“I don’t know what you want me to say, Tru. I think this is a conversation you should be having with your dad.” I reached out and took both of her hands. “But I will say this. I care about all of you with my whole heart. No matter what happens in this world, I will stand beside you.”

She nodded and looked down. “I’m scared.”

“Of what, sweet girl?”

She sniffed and I pulled her to me, wrapping her up in my arms.
