“Drink.”

“Is this part of the explanation?”

“No, it’s part of the discharge instructions.”

I chuckled and took the water. I gulped it down, placed the glass in the sink, and then leaned against the counter.

“Enough with the sidetracking. We have maybe an hour before they return.”

“Okay.” Finch moved to the center of the kitchen and started removing his shirt. I wanted to ask what he was doing but realized he was about to show me something extraordinary.

CHAPTER TWENTY-SIX

Finch

My heart was beating faster than a hummingbird’s wings, and it was impossible for me to meet Easton’s eyes. What would he say? Would this be the end for us?

Arachnis had broken the laws, but I hadn’t helped by exposing my true self to Easton. No doubt, there were going to be serious repercussions across the board, but in order for him to be prepared for what was coming, he had to see…I wanted him to see me—and maybe, maybe he’d love this side of me.

The sound of the kitchen clock ticking helped me focus. I dropped the shirt, since it was the only item encumbering me from spreading my wings.

“Before I show you this, please understand I’m still me.” I finally glanced at Easton’s eyes and saw worry, and noticed his fingers were twitching as if he wanted to grab me. I’d have been lying if I’d said I didn’t want him to.

“I know who you are.”

I shook my head. “No, you don’t. But my heart is the same no matter what you see.”

He opened his mouth, likely to tell me something sweet, but I had to do this. He had to see, and from there he could choose his path.

Deep breath and closed eyes—removing my glamour was simply a thought. In my mind, I lifted the veil. For the first time in the human realm, that veil felt heavy. It protected me in so many ways, and I was about to reveal my true form to the only person who’d ever had a hold of my heart.

I expanded my wings slowly, careful not to bang them on anything. With that, my pointed ears and shimmering skin were visible. While my eyes didn’t change much, the irises of my eyes were wider, covering a lot of the white. My mother always said it was as if I had diamonds in my eyes.

The room was so silent: not a gasp, no outrage, nothing at all. I peeked through my eyelashes at Easton. His jaw had dropped, and I equated his expression to that of someone being struck by lightning. There wasn’t fear but a twinge of amazement and disbelief.

I stood there, not even attempting to move. Easton needed to let what he was witnessing soak in.

“You’re…” Slowly, he advanced. When he made to move around me, I tucked my wings against my back so he could circle me.

He stopped behind me, and I peered over my shoulder. He was staring at my wings.

“You can touch them if you want,” I whispered, as if the full volume of my voice would shake him from his calm demeanor.

“Will…does it hurt?”

“When you touch them?” He nodded. “No.”

Easton was a big man, and his hands weren’t an exception, but I watched as he crept toward one of my wings as if he were afraid to cause me pain.

His finger tenderly made contact with what humans might refer to as long scales. But to fae it was simply our skin. Softer but insanely durable.

A shiver ran through me as he traced over a nerve bundle, and he jerked away.

“Sorry,” he mumbled.

“No, it’s fine, it didn’t hurt. It felt nice.”

His gaze wandered over every inch of me, and he slipped his hands into his pockets, returned to the counter, leaned on it, and watched me.
