What the fuck was happening right now? “Linc, I can’t get out of here, I demand you to evacuate.”

“No one can hear you, Fireman.”

“Are you the cause of this fire?”

He rested his shoulder on the wall, arms folded over his chest as if he hadn’t a care in the world. “It’s not my best work, but I’m proud of it all the same.”

“You’re sick.”

“Oh, no, I’m not sick. This is what I am in my form. Darkness always beats out the light no matter what those fancy memes you humans put up on social media say.”

“Humans?”

He covered his mouth in mock horror. “Oh dear, have I spoiled the surprise?”

He laughed and stood straight again. “I should thank you instead of killing you. But I have my orders, and so it shall be done. Finch has been too carefree, and happy—it’s been nauseating. Now he’s being called home, where he’ll face the punishment he deserves.”

I opened my mouth to speak when Arachnis slid a finger along the wall. The paint began to bubble as if the fire were being called to him.

“This will hurt a lot.”

The wall began bubbling like a witch’s brew and collapsed. Arachnis chuckled and in the blink of an eye was gone.

I slammed my body into the door as the fire got closer. “Lincoln!”

“Boss!” He started helping me, but it was no use—the fire had me cornered.

“Lincoln, evacuate, I can’t get out. Go!”

“Koop, I can’t leave you.”

“That’s a fucking order. Go now!”

“Heard.”

I sank to the floor, looking around for a way to get out, but it was useless. Arachnis was right; I was going to die here.

I thought of Milo and Tru. Would Finch take care of them? Would they be okay?

I couldn’t concentrate on anything Arachnis had said as the fire was so close, the heat was soaking me in sweat.

I slammed my head against the wall behind me. I didn’t want to die. I knew it was a possibility but this was Fool’s Pass; things like this didn’t happen here.

I needed a miracle.

Gasping, I reached into my pocket for the sugar stuff Finch had given me.

I pulled off my glove, shoved my hand into the powder, and did exactly what he’d said: I sprinkled it in front of me.

A loud screech shook me to my bones, but damned if the fire didn’t retreat. I stood quickly, sprinkling more and more of it as I moved forward, and I swore I could see a face in the flames. When I finally made a safe opening, I tossed the rest of it as far into the blaze as I could and ran.

CHAPTER TWENTY-FOUR

Finch

I watched as the flames grew and grew and firefighters went in and out. Why weren’t they getting hoses out and trying to extinguish the flames? I didn’t understand enough about their job, so I paced and gawked at the warehouse as it turned into a nightmare right before my eyes.

Their jackets had their names written on them, which was convenient since I had no idea who was who in all that gear.
